Book excerpt: "Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) are one of the today's most successful technologies for developing systems that require real time operation and providing additional flexibility to the designer. This research is focused on developing a control board for a permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) using an FPGA module. The board is configured for individual use of an FPGA, digital signal processor (DSP) or in combination to control the PMSM by generating the required Pulse Width Modulator (PWM) to the inverter in order to drive and control the speed of the PMSM. Since, the exact rotor position and speed are required to control the motor; a useful method is developed digitally and implemented in the FPGA hardware module. The speed observer (SO), in which the Hall effect signals were used to calculate the speed and the angle of the rotor. In this thesis, three different techniques of PWM generation were developed and combined with rotor position and speed method. The project is implemented in Altera FPGA using Quartus II software V11.0 with VHDL as the supporting language. The design achieved high performance and accuracy of the detection estimation and control scheme for the Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine. Error and design analysis has been done also"--Abstract, leaf iii.

Book excerpt: Ohio State University (OSU) is uniquely poised to establish such a center, with interdisciplinary emphasis on modeling, simulation, design and control of hybrid-electric drives for a number of reasons, some of which are: (1) The OSU Center for Automotive Research (CAR) already provides an infrastructure for interdisciplinary automotive research and graduate education; the facilities available at OSU-CAR in the area of vehicle and powertrain research are among the best in the country. CAR facilities include 31,000 sq. feet of space, multiple chassis and engine dynamometers, an anechoic chamber, and a high bay area. (2) OSU has in excess of 10 graduate level courses related to automotive systems. A graduate level sequence has already been initiated with GM. In addition, an Automotive Systems Engineering (ASE) program cosponsored by the mechanical and electrical engineering programs, had been formulated earlier at OSU, independent of the GATE program proposal. The main objective of the ASE is to provide multidisciplinary graduate education and training in the field of automotive systems to Masters level students. This graduate program can be easily adapted to fulfill the spirit of the GATE Center of Excellence. (3) A program in Mechatronic Systems Engineering has been in place at OSU since 1994; this program has a strong emphasis on automotive system integration issues, and has emphasized hybrid-electric vehicles as one of its application areas. (4) OSU researchers affiliated with CAR have been directly involved in the development and study of: HEV modeling and simulation; electric drives; transmission design and control; combustion engines; and energy storage systems. These activities have been conducted in collaboration with government and automotive industry sponsors; further, the same researchers have been actively involved in continuing education programs in these areas with the automotive industry. The proposed effort will include: (1) The development of a laboratory facility that will include: electric drive and IC engine test benches; a test vehicle designed for rapid installation of prototype drives; benches for the measurement and study of HEV energy storage components (batteries, ultra-capacitors, flywheels); hardware-in-the-loop control system development tools. (2) The creation of new courses and upgrades of existing courses on subjects related to: HEV modeling and simulation; supervisory control of HEV drivetrains; engine, transmission, and electric drive modeling and control. Specifically, two new courses (one entitled HEV Component Analysis: and the other entitled HEV System Integration and Control) will be developed. Two new labs, that will be taught with the courses (one entitled HEV Components Lab and one entitled HEV Systems and Control lab) will also be developed. (3) The consolidation of already existing ties among faculty in electrical and mechanical engineering departments. (4) The participation of industrial partners through: joint laboratory development; internship programs; continuing education programs; research project funding. The proposed effort will succeed because of the already exceptional level of involvement in HEV research and in graduate education in automotive engineering at OSU, and because the PIs have a proven record of interdisciplinary collaboration as evidenced by joint proposals, joint papers, and co-advising of graduate students. OSU has been expanding its emphasis in Automotive Systems for quite some time. This has led to numerous successes such as the establishment of the Center of Automotive Research, a graduate level course sequence with GM, and numerous grants and contracts on automotive research. The GATE Center of Excellence is a natural extension of what educators at OSU already do well.

Book excerpt: The Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of FreedomCAR (Cooperative Automotive Research) and Vehicle Technologies office has a strong interest in making rapid progress in permanent magnet (PM) machine development. The DOE FreedomCAR program is directing various technology development projects that will advance the technology and hopefully lead to a near-term request for proposals (RFP) for a to-be-determined level of initial production. This aggressive approach is possible because the technology is clearly within reach and the approach is deemed essential, based on strong market demand, escalating fuel prices, and competitive considerations. In response, this study began parallel development paths that included a literature search/review, development and utilization of multiple parametric models, verification of the modeling methodology, development of an interior PM (IPM) machine baseline design, development of alternative machine baseline designs, and cost analyses for several candidate machines. This report summarizes the results of these activities as of September 2004. This report provides background and summary information for recent machine parametric studies and testing programs that demonstrate both the potential capabilities and technical limitations of brushless PM machines (axial gap and radial gap), the IPM machine, the surface-mount PM machines (interior or exterior rotor), induction machines, and switched-reluctance machines. The FreedomCAR program, while acknowledging the progress made by Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), Delphi, Delco-Remy International, and others in these programs, has redirected efforts toward a ''short path'' to a marketable and competitive PM motor for hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) traction applications. The program has developed a set of performance targets for the type of traction machine desired. The short-path approach entails a comprehensive design effort focusing on the IPM machine and meeting the performance targets. The selection of the IPM machine reflects industry's confidence in this market-proven design that exhibits a high power density.

Book excerpt: The 2004 Toyota Prius exceeded sales expectations and led the automotive industry to realize that there is a healthy market for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). The Prius uses two interior permanent magnet motors to manipulate power flow throughout the drive system. Permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) are most suitable for HEVs and full electric vehicles due to their high efficiency, high power density, and fast dynamic response. This thesis will present vector control theory for PMSMs, with focus on interior permanent magnet motors. The primary 50kW drive motor and inverter of the 2004 Toyota Prius Synergy drive system was removed for an intensive thermal, electrical, and mechanical evaluation in a dynamometer test cell at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. These evaluations include locked rotor, back-EMF, and motoring operation region tests. The resulting data is presented to reveal characteristics such as torque capabilities, thermal limitations, and motor efficiencies for all toque-speed operation points. One of the most challenging tasks of the evaluation was to solve problems related to electromagnetic interference (EMI). The pulse width modulation (PWM) driven high voltage converter/inverter is a large source of electromagnetic field radiation and nearby low level signals, including control circuitry for the hybrid system, will experience EMI if proper countermeasures are not taken. Methods to reduce electromagnetic field radiation and practices to prevent EMI are discussed.

Book excerpt: The permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is increasingly playing an important role in electric propulsion systems due to its many advantages over competing technologies. For successful implementation of the PMSM rotor position and speed information are required. A resolver or encoder attached to the shaft of the machine usually provides this information Many applications, however, cannot tolerate the use of the position sensor due to space and weight limitations, reliability concerns, or packaging issues. Thus, there has been an intense interest in the development of a so-called postion sensorless drive, where the PMSM stator itself is used as the rotor position sensor. In this work, a previously developed sensorless electric drive technique fl is applied to a high power permanent magnet machine. The sensorless drive hardware implementation is presented in detail. A set of experiments is used to quantify the performance of the sensorless drive approach under a wide variety of operating conditions, and implementation issues and results are discussed. The developed sensorless electric drive serves as a technology demonstrator for future naval applications.
