Book excerpt: Paper sludges are being used with increasing frequency for construction of hydraulic barrier layers in landfill final covers because they often have substantial clay content and relatively low hydraulic conductivity. This paper addresses the assessment of the hydraulic conductivity of paper sludges using data obtained from a series of laboratory and field tests conducted on two barrier layers constructed with paper sludge that were part of final cover test sections. Field hydraulic conductivities were measured using sealed double-ring infiltrometers (SDRIs) and two-stage borehole permeameters (TSBs). Laboratory tests were conducted in flexible-wall permeameters on undisturbed specimens collected as blocks and in thin-wall sampling tubes as well as remolded specimens. The in-service hydraulic conductivity, computed from water balance data, was also available for comparison. Analysis of the data shows that similar hydraulic conductivities are measured in large field tests and on small laboratory specimens regardless of whether the specimens are undisturbed or remolded. Based on the analysis, recommendations are made regarding the need for field testing, laboratory and field test methods, and sampling techniques.

Book excerpt: Because of the limitations of conventional pump-and-treat systems in treating groundwater contaminants, permeable barriers are potentially more cost-effective than pump-and-treat systems for treating dissolved chlorinated solvent plumes, which may persist in the saturated zone for several decades. Other contaminants, such as chromium or other soluble heavy metals, can also be treated with this technology. Permeable Barriers for Groundwater Remediation discusses the types of permeable barriers, their design and construction, and how they can be monitored to evaluate compliance. It provides practical guidance on reactive media selection, treatability testing, hydrogeologic and geochemical modeling, and innovative installation techniques for the evaluation and application of this promising new technology. The types of permeable barriers discussed include: trench-type and caisson-based reactive cells; innovative emplacements, such as horizontal trenching and jetting; and continuous reactive barriers versus funnel-and-gate systems.

Book excerpt: Earth scientists and geotechnical engineers are increasingly challenged to solve environmental problems related to waste disposal facilities and cleanup of contaminated sites. The effort has given rise to a new discipline of specialists in the field of environmental geotechnology. To be effective, environmental geotechnologists must not only be armed with the traditional knowledge of fields such as geology and civil engineering, but also be knowledgeable of principles of hydrogeology, chemistry, and biological processes. In addition, the environmental geotechnologist must be completely up to date on the often complex cadre of local and national regulations, must comprehend the often complex legal issues and sometimes mind-boggling financial impli cations of a project, and must be able to communicate effectively with a host of other technical specialists, regulatory officials, attorneys, local land owners, journalists, and others. The field of environmental geo technology will no doubt continue to offer unique challenges. The purpose of this book is to summarize the current state of practice in the field of environmental geotechnology. Part One covers broadly applicable principles such as hydrogeology, geochemistry, and con taminant transport in soil and rock. Part Two describes in detail the underlying principles for design and construction of new waste disposal facilities. Part Three covers techniques for site remediation. Finally, Part Four addresses the methodologies for monitoring. The topics of 'waste disposal' and 'site remediation' are extra ordinarily broad.
