A prominent feature of both the text-book and the manual is the subordination of manipulation to thought processes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Exercises in Elementary Physics The book is made up mainly Of the author's instructions to his own pupils for their laboratory work. The course of which this forms a part includes also the performance of all necessary descriptive experiments before the class, and the use of a text-book. Before the pupil goes to work in the laboratory at all, he-should be given a general idea of how knowledge is acquired experimentally, and the steps involved in carrying on an experimental investigation. The instruction on these points should be illustrated by some simple typical experiments by the teacher. After wards the relative order Of text-book and laboratory work will naturally depend upon the nature of the laboratory exercises. In exercises involving the study of conditions, as in those on Magnetism, and some of those on Electricity and Heat, the author prefers that the laboratory work pre cede the text-book work; but in exercises involving definite measurement, as in Specific Gravity and Specific Heat, this order may well be reversed. Certainly, in the determina tion of a physical law by measurements of two values, as in the exercises on Elasticity or on the Pendulum, the labora tory work should come first. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical Experiments: A Manual and Note Book Containing the Laboratory Exercises Required for Admission to Harvard University, and Many Other Exercises, and Adapted to Accompany Any Text Book on Physics There are obvious advantages in having the entire history of an experiment, including details of the manipulations, the data and results obtained, question and answer, suggestion and deduction, in immediate conjunction and included between the same covers. Especially is this the case in schools where (as in Boston) the laboratory manuals are retained by the pupil at the end of his course, while the text-books in science remain the property of the city. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Exercises in Elementary Physics: A Manual for Students in Academies and High Schools This little work is, as its name implies, simply a manual of exercises in elementary physics. No claim is made that it embraces all the exercises suitable for work of this grade. It is believed, however, that the exercises as herein presented constitute a sound basis for a strong, rational, and flexible course in elementary laboratory physics. There has been no attempt in this book to usurp the functions of the teacher. Much of the details of the work are most effective when they come directly from him. The inspiration must also come, in large measure, from the instructor; no book can take his place in this particular. In handling laboratory work in physics of any grade, the instructor is confronted at all times with the serious problem of providing apparatus. This problem is all the more serious in view of the fact that good work, even in elementary physics, is quite impossible without reasonably good apparatus. Speaking to this very point, Professor Nichols has said: "The list of instruments essential to the carrying on of an effective course in laboratory physics is not a large one. It includes certain standard apparatus, such as the balance, the air-pump, the thermometer, the projecting lantern, the electrical machine, and the galvanometer; together with such accessories as are necessary to use with these instruments. Without such an equipment, no college or school should attempt to give instruction in physics." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Exercises in Anatomy and Physiology Since physiology precedes physics and chemistry in the ordinary high school courses of study, it is necessary to give the pupil a few ideas of the fundamental principles of these subjects. It seems wise to discuss oxidation and its products more or less thoroughly, and to dwell upon os mosis, atmospheric pressure, and the properties of acids and alkalis. The structure and physiology of the organs of special sense (eye, ear), as well as the thorough consider ation of levers, should be omitted, in my judgment, until after a course in physics has been taken. It is not expected that all of the following experiments will be performed in the limited time usually assigned in the curriculum to this Subject. The exercises are, how ever, sufficiently varied to allow a wide range of choice. The laboratory work on a given topic should, if possible, be given before the study of that topic in the text-book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Text-Book of Physics: Largely Experimental; Including the Harvard College "Descriptive List of Elementary Exercises in Physics" The laboratory Exercises of the book are, save in a few unimportant particulars identical with those given in the Harvard Descriptive List of Elementary Exercises in Phys ics, as revised in 1903. The second edition of the book, issued in 1897, was divided into a First Part and a Second Part, the former intended for pupils a year or two younger than those tak ing the latter; and certain subjects, Liquids and Gases, Composition and Resolution of Forces, Gravity and Centre of Gravity, begun in the First Part were taken up again, for more thorough treatment, in the Second Part. The present edition, the third, abolishes this dis continuity and puts the substance of Chapters XIV, XV, and XVI of the second edition into the early part, thus shortening and simplifying the book. On the other hand, the Pendulum is put farther on, into connection with Mo mentum, etc. This rearrangement involves a renumbering of some of the Exercises, which are, for the most part, not greatly changed in their latest revision. Alongside the new number at the head of each Exercise its old number is given in parenthesis. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Everyday Physics: A Laboratory Manual The beginner in science must be guided carefully in his early experiments if he is to develop habits of careful observation, clear thinking, and orderly presentation of results. The exercises in this manual have been carefully designed and the instructions definitely stated, in order that the pupil may see clearly the end in view and the method of procedure, with the least possible amount of assistance on the part of the instructor in charge. On the other hand, the pupil must be given a chance to think for himself if he is ever to develop a scientific imagination or to acquire initiative. Under the head of Topics for Further Study and Investigation, hints, topics, and suggestions have been freely given for the development of projects in connection with which the pupil is expected, of his own initiative, to gather information from trade catalogues and textbooks, from practical men at work in his vicinity, or from observations at home, and to draw his own conclusions and report the results. A practical exercise offered under this head may often be substituted with profit for a more formal exercise outlined in the body of the text.' Special credit should be given in each case for this part of the work, and the pupil should be encouraged to make this department an important feature of his course. Nearly every exercise is preceded by an Introduction, intended to show the bearing of the topic in hand upon related subjects or to make the object of the exercise a little more definite, and is fol lowed, usually, by a few carefully framed questions or problems emphasizing the immediate application of the principle involved to the affairs of daily life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Laboratory Manual of Physics Thls point of view concerning the function of experimental work in elementary physics is maintained throughout the Manual, particularly in the statement of the purpose of each experiment and in the questions asked in the discussions. Consistently with the View that the laboratory course is not a sufficient basis from which to evolve physics as a science, it is assumed in the discussion of experimental results that the pupil has at least carefully read his text-book on the subject of the experiment, and is therefore in _a position not only to state the conclusions which are supported by his work, but also to pass judgment on the quality of it by comparing his results with those known to be correct. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual of Physics The reason for adding this book to the large number 'of laboratory manuals is that those now in use either contain too much matter to be successfully covered by a pupil in one year, or elaborate the principles chosen without regard to economy in time. In a large number of schools physics occurs in the course for but one year, and is given four or, at most, five periods per week. If of these five periods two are given to individual laboratory work, not more than fifty experiments can be performed, and these must be made so comprehensive as to afford a broad basis for class teaching. The main one was the hope that the student might be induced to prepare himself for performing the experiment by a preliminary reading of the principles and methods involved. The second object was to avoid the danger, so far as possible, of making the descriptions apply to one particular set of apparatus.
