Book Synopsis Invertebrate Zoology by : Robert L. Wallace
Download or read book Invertebrate Zoology written by Robert L. Wallace and published by Benjamin Cummings. This book was released on 1997 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Appropriate for a laboratory course in invertebrate zoology. Invertebrate Zoology continues to be the most current, up-to-date manual available. The popular phylum- by-phylum approach has been retained, providing a solid conceptual framework for advanced work in behavior, ecology, physiology, and related subjects. Numerous exercises for studying the structure and function of invertebrates are used. To complete each exercise, students must make observations, conduct investigations, and ask and answer questions all of which helps them gain a comprehensive understanding of invertebrates.

Book Synopsis Nervous Systems and Control of Behavior by : Charles Derby
Download or read book Nervous Systems and Control of Behavior written by Charles Derby and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-09-24 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crustacean Nervous Systems and their Control of Behavior is the third volume of the series The Natural History of the Crustacea. This volume is on the functional organization of crustacean nervous systems, and how those nervous systems produce behavior. It complements other volumes on related topics of feeding biology, reproductive biology, endocrine systems, and behavioral ecology. There is a rich history of the study of the neurobiology of crustaceans, going back over 150 years. This has included studies on how their nervous systems allow them to perform behaviors that are adapted to their particular environments, as well as studying them as model organisms to understand basic biomedical principles about neural function, such as sensory transduction and processing, synaptic transmission and integration, neuromodulation, and learning and memory. The volume has three sections that build progressively on each other. The first section is on the basic organizational features of the crustacean nervous system and the principles upon which it is built. The second section is on sensory ecology - the organization of each sensory system and how it is used in intra- and interspecific interactions, within an ecological context. The third section uses case studies of how crustacean nervous systems are organized to perform complex behaviors and interactions, such as walking, escape, social interactions, and memory and learning. Taken together, the 20 chapters synthesize our modern understanding of the neural control of behavior in crustaceans, based on the most recent technologies in physiological recording, molecular biology, and computational science. This volume will be useful to students and researchers as a concise summary of current knowledge of crustacean neuroscience.
Book Synopsis CRC Handbook of Chromatography by : Kumar D. Mukherjee
Download or read book CRC Handbook of Chromatography written by Kumar D. Mukherjee and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-11-01 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Handbook of Chromatography: Analysis of Lipids provides a valuable review of state-of-the-art applications of chromatographic techniques (TLC, GC, HPLC) and other analytical techniques. Much of this volume is devoted to applications of HPLC (including supercritical fluid chromatography) in the analysis of lipids such as fatty acids, oxygenated fatty acids, enantiomeric acyl- and alkylglycerols, and lipoproteins. The handbook also provides extensive coverage of applications of combinations of various chromatographic techniques used in the analysis of ozonides, anacardic acids, glycerophospholipids, products of lipolysis, artifacts and contaminants in edible fats, acylated proteins, non-caloric lipids, lipophilic vitamins, acyl-Coenzyme A thioesters, dolichols, mycolic acids, technical fats and fat products, and liposomes. Handbook of Chromatography: Analysis of Lipids will be a useful reference for oil chemists, biochemists, fat science technologists, and other scientists involved in lipid research.
Book Synopsis Nerves, Muscles, and Electricity: An Introductory Manual of Electrophysiology by : George Camougis
Download or read book Nerves, Muscles, and Electricity: An Introductory Manual of Electrophysiology written by George Camougis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries man knew about the lightning of the sky (atmospheric or physical electricity) and the numbing effects from contact with powerful electric fishes (animal electricity). Then, after proper experimentation and a synthetic ration ale, it began to appear that physical and animal electricity were related in fundamental respects. This realization was made at the end of the eighteenth century, since when the pages of history have been replete with exciting dis coveries and developments in electricity and magnetism, electrochemistry, and electrophysiology. It is hoped that this manual will enable some students to relive some of that excitement. The author remembers vividly the excitement when, as an undergraduate, he saw his first action potential. This book is not intended for any particular group of students; it should prove to be of some value to students in secondary schools, colleges, and gradu ate schools. Based on personal experience, the author feels that many teachers will also find it of use. Nor is the manual intended solely as a laboratory manual for an introductory course in neurophysiology. Some of the experiments might be introduced into the formallaboratory schedule of general or animal physiology courses. Alternatively, the various experiments might provide the bases for the beginning of special projects lasting for a full semester or even longer.

Book Synopsis Elements of Marine Ecology by : R. V. Tait
Download or read book Elements of Marine Ecology written by R. V. Tait and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The widening interest in marine biology has led to the establishment of an increasing number of school and undergraduate courses in the subject. There are many books on various aspects of marine biology which students can read with advantage, but few that are suitable as introductory reading at the commencement of studies. This book has been compiled primarily as an aid for zoology students at the start of a special course on marine biology. The text is an introduction to the author's annual course for undergraduates. The aim has been a concise presentation of information and ideas over the general field of marine ecology, with guidance on the selection of more advanced reading. The sources of further information given at the end of each chapter have been chosen as far as possible from books and journals to which students should have reasonably easy access. These lists provide a selection of additional reading which starts at an elementary level and be comes more advanced as the course proceeds. Students entering the author's course are usually in their third under graduate year, and a general knowledge of the phyla is therefore assumed.
Book Synopsis Invertebrate Zoology by : Bernd Schierwater
Download or read book Invertebrate Zoology written by Bernd Schierwater and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-07-08 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Invertebrate Zoology: A Tree of Life Approach is a comprehensive and authoritative textbook adopting an explicitly phylogenetic organization. Most of the classical anatomical and morphological work has not been changed – it established the foundation of Invertebrate Zoology. With the explosion of Next-Generation Sequencing approaches, there has been a sea-change in the recognized phylogenetic relationships among and between invertebrate lineages. In addition, the merger of evolutionary and developmental biology (evo-devo) has dramatically contributed to changes in the understanding of invertebrate biology. Synthesizing these three approaches (classical morphology, sequencing data, and evo-devo studies) offers students an entirely unique perspective of invertebrate diversity. Key Features One of the first textbooks to combine classical morphological approaches and newer evo-devo and Next-Generation Sequencing approaches to address Invertebrate Zoology Organized along taxonomic lines in accord with the latest understanding of invertebrate phylogeny Will provide background in basic systematic analysis useful within any study of biodiversity A wealth of ancillary materials for students and teachers, including downloadable figures, lecture slides, web links, and phylogenetic data matrices
