Book Synopsis The Oxford Encyclopedia of American Cultural and Intellectual History by : Joan Shelley Rubin
Download or read book The Oxford Encyclopedia of American Cultural and Intellectual History written by Joan Shelley Rubin and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 1551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Encyclopedia of American Cultural and Intellectual History brings together in one two-volume set the record of the nation's values, aspirations, anxieties, and beliefs as expressed in both everyday life and formal bodies of thought. Over the past twenty years, the field of cultural history has moved to the center of American historical studies, and has come to encompass the experiences of ordinary citizens in such arenas as reading and religious practice as well as the accomplishments of prominent artists and writers. Some of the most imaginative scholarship in recent years has emerged from this burgeoning field. The scope of the volume reflects that development: the encyclopedia incorporates popular entertainment ranging from minstrel shows to video games, middlebrow ventures like Chautauqua lectures and book clubs, and preoccupations such as "Perfectionism" and "Wellness" that have shaped Americans' behavior at various points in their past and that continue to influence attitudes in the present. The volumes also make available recent scholarly insights into the writings of political scientists, philosophers, feminist theorists, social reformers, and other thinkers whose works have furnished the underpinnings of Americans' civic activities and personal concerns. Anyone wishing to understand the hearts and minds of the inhabitants of the United States from the early days of settlement to the twenty-first century will find the encyclopedia invaluable.

Book Synopsis Cultural Genocide: How Radical Capitalism Destroys People’s Intellectual Skills by : Pablo Medina Aguerrebere
Download or read book Cultural Genocide: How Radical Capitalism Destroys People’s Intellectual Skills written by Pablo Medina Aguerrebere and published by Editorial Circulo Rojo. This book was released on 2024-08-02 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radical capitalists running some companies, public organizations, and governments resort to aggressive techniques to destroy people’s intellectual skills. Some examples of these criminal practices are preventing employees from enrolling in lifelong learning programs, forcing students to go to unfunded high schools, or allowing universities to become corporations that do not care about knowledge. Citizens need to be aware of these corporate behaviors; otherwise, radical capitalism will destroy their social consciousness and condemn them to be enslaved people who only work and buy products but do not think and do not understand society. In this book, I identify some of these practices and propose ideas to protect people’s right to learn. This book consists of five chapters, each focusing on different life stages: childhood (0-12 years), adolescence (13-19 years), adulthood (20-39 years), middle age (40-59 years), and old age (60 years and above). Each chapter includes 200 examples from different countries that prove how radical capitalists in some companies, public organizations, and governments try to destroy culture. This cultural genocide affects citizens throughout their lives.
Book Synopsis The Postcolonial Intellectual by : Oliver Lovesey
Download or read book The Postcolonial Intellectual written by Oliver Lovesey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Addressing a neglected dimension in postcolonial scholarship, Oliver Lovesey examines the figure of the postcolonial intellectual as repeatedly evoked by the fabled troika of Said, Spivak, and Bhabha and by members of the pan-African diaspora such as Cabral, Fanon, and James. Lovesey’s primary focus is Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, one of the greatest writers of post-independence Africa. Ngũgĩ continues to be a vibrant cultural agitator and innovator who, in contrast to many other public intellectuals, has participated directly in grassroots cultural renewal, enduring imprisonment and exile as a consequence of his engagement in political action. Lovesey’s comprehensive study concentrates on Ngũgĩ’s non-fictional prose writings, including his largely overlooked early journalism and his most recent autobiographical and theoretical work. He offers a postcolonial critique that acknowledges Ngũgĩ’s complex position as a virtual spokesperson for the oppressed and global conscience who now speaks from a location of privilege. Ngũgĩ’s writings, Lovesey shows, display a seemingly paradoxical consistency in their concerns over nearly five decades at the same time that there have been enormous transformations in his ideology and a shift in his focus from Africa’s holocaust to Africa’s renaissance. Lovesey argues that Ngũgĩ’s view of the intellectual has shifted from an alienated, nearly neocolonial stance to a position that allows him to celebrate intellectual activism and a return to the model of the oral vernacular intellectual even as he challenges other global intellectuals. Tracing the development of this notion of the postcolonial intellectual, Lovesey argues for Ngũgĩ’s rightful position as a major postcolonial theorist who helped establish postcolonial studies.
Book Synopsis National Intellectual Capital and the Financial Crisis in Greece, Italy, Portugal, and Spain by : Carol Yeh-Yun Lin
Download or read book National Intellectual Capital and the Financial Crisis in Greece, Italy, Portugal, and Spain written by Carol Yeh-Yun Lin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first decade of the twenty-first century, the biggest event of worldwide proportion was the 2008 global financial crisis, which was caused primarily by ineffective governance, failed surveillance systems, and implementation flaws. While fiscal and monetary policies succeeded in pulling many countries out of a financial freefall, most economies have performed beneath pre-recession levels as governments continued to struggle with their finances. Examining the financial crisis from the viewpoint of intangible assets provides a different perspective from traditional economic approaches. National Intellectual Capital (NIC), comprised mainly of human capital, market capital, process capital, renewal capital, and financial capital, is a valuable intangible asset and a key source of national competitive advantage in today’s knowledge economy. The authors—pioneers in the field—present extensive data and a rigorous conceptual framework to analyze the connections between the global financial crisis and NIC development. Covering the period from 2005 to 2010 across 48 countries, the authors establish a positive correlation between NIC and GDP per capita and consider the impact of NIC investment for short-term recovery and long-term risk control and strategy formulation. Each volume in a series of SpringerBriefs on NIC and the financial crisis provides in-depth coverage of the impact of the crisis, the aftermath, future prospects, and policy implications for a regional cluster. This volume focuses on Greece, Italy, Portugal, and Spain.

Book Synopsis Democracy at work: pressure and propaganda in Portugal and Brazil by : Rita Figueiras
Download or read book Democracy at work: pressure and propaganda in Portugal and Brazil written by Rita Figueiras and published by Imprensa da Universidade de Coimbra / Coimbra University Press. This book was released on 2014-12-01 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Democracy at Work: Pressure and Propaganda in Portugal and Brazil addresses democracy both as an institutional value system and as a practice. How are the media exerting their mediation role? How are the media re-(a)presenting the political world to society? Are different media voices offering diversified and complementary perspectives on politics? How is propaganda perceived within different democratic and economic contexts? Is political trust and mistrust shaping the strategy of propaganda? These questions are addressed in theoretical and empirical chapters in a book that addresses problems which are in need of urgent discussion, as their impact and consequences are deeply transforming politics and the way politics is communicated, lived and understood by its main actors. Within this framework, Political Communication Studies has a major role in identifying and urging new diagnosis of, and insights into, the political and the media systems, and, above all, how both the people and political institutions can both survive crisis and improve democracy in the Lusophone world. This book aims at making a contribution to that acknowledgment.
Book Synopsis Intellectual Property and Traditional Cultural Expressions by : Daphne Zografos
Download or read book Intellectual Property and Traditional Cultural Expressions written by Daphne Zografos and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'This book performs a great service by drawing together the intellectual property law and experience of a number of countries in relation to the protection of traditional cultural expressions.' Peter Drahos, Australian National University This unique book provides an in-depth analysis of the different methods that have been proposed to protect traditional cultural expressions (TCEs) by using intellectual property rights. Intellectual Property and Traditional Cultural Expressions examines the possibility of protecting TCEs with copyright laws on the one hand, and 'origin related' intellectual property rights, such as trademarks, certification marks, geographical indications and laws against misrepresentation on the other. In particular, it examines which rights are conceptually best suited for the protection of TCEs, and appear more appropriate to meet the range of concerns raised by the holders of that knowledge and policymakers in culturally-rich developing countries. Providing a range of case studies, this book will prove a stimulating read for academics, practitioners, international organisations and policymakers. It will also greatly benefit law or political sciences postgraduate students with an interest in intellectual property and traditional knowledge, TCEs, and development.

Book Synopsis Remembering World War II Refugees in Contemporary Portugal by : Verena Lindemann Lino

This book was released on 2021-08-23 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes an innovative approach to the study of memories of transit and exile in Portugal between 1933 and 1945 in artistic media. Informed by contemporary debates within memory and translation studies, it develops a translational perspective on transcultural memory and explores its ethical implications. This study provides an in-depth analysis of Daniel Blaufuks’s inter-art project Sob Céus Estranhos, Domingos Amaral’s novel Enquanto Salazar Dormia and João Canijo’s documentary Fantasia Lusitana. It examines the heterocultural networks of signification that these artistic media mobilize to implicate the presence of World War II refugees in Portugal in contemporary negotiations of communality. By approaching memory through a translational lens on culture, this book also offers new perspectives on remediation, memory transfer and the ethical dimensions of remembrance in the context of transcultural memory and migration.

Book Synopsis A Human Rights Framework for Intellectual Property, Innovation and Access to Medicines by : Joo-Young Lee
Download or read book A Human Rights Framework for Intellectual Property, Innovation and Access to Medicines written by Joo-Young Lee and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the relationship between intellectual property in pharmaceuticals and access to medicines from a human rights perspective, with a view to contributing to the development of a human rights framework that can guide States in enacting and implementing intellectual property law and policy. The study primarily explores whether conflicts between patents and human rights in the context of access to medicines are inevitable, or whether patents can be made to serve human rights. What could be a normative framework that human rights might provide for patents and innovation? Joo-Young Lee argues that it is necessary to have a deepened understanding of each of the two sets of norms that govern this issue, that is, patent law and international human rights law. The chapters investigate the relevant dimensions of patent law, and analyse particular human rights bearing upon the issue of intellectual property and access to medicines. This study will be of great interest to academic specialists, practitioners or professionals in the fields of human rights, trade, and intellectual property, as well as policy makers, activists, and health professionals across the world working in intellectual property and human rights.
