Download or read book Jack Tar vs. John Bull written by Jesse Lemisch and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-01-28 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic study explores the role of merchant seamen in precipitating the American revolution. It analyzes the participation of seamen in impressment riots, the Stamp Act Riot, the Battle of Golden Hill, and other incidents. The book describes these events and explores the social world of the seamen, offering explanations for their actions. Focusing on the culture, politics, and experiences of early American seamen, this legendary study played an important role in the development of histories of the common people and has inspired generations of social and early American historians. Lemisch's later related article, Jack Tar in the Streets, was named one of the ten most important articles ever published in the prestigious William and Mary Quarterly. Long unavailable, this edition includes an index and an appreciative foreword by Marcus Rediker, author of Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea: Merchant Seamen, Pirates, and the Anglo-American Maritime World, 1700-1750 (Ph.D. Dissertation, Yale University, 1962)
Book Synopsis Servants and Servitude in Colonial America by : Russell M. Lawson
Download or read book Servants and Servitude in Colonial America written by Russell M. Lawson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dispossessed people of Colonial America included thousands of servants who either voluntarily or involuntarily ended up serving as agricultural, domestic, skilled, and unskilled laborers in the northern, middle, and southern British American colonies as well as British Caribbean colonies. Thousands of people arrived in the British-American colonies as indentured servants, transported felons, and kidnapped children forced into bound labor. Others already in America, such as Indians, freedmen, and poor whites, placed themselves into the service of others for food, clothing, shelter, and security; poverty in colonial America was relentless, and servitude was the voluntary and involuntary means by which the poor adapted, or tried to adapt, to miserable conditions. From the 1600s to the 1700s, Blacks, Indians, Europeans, Englishmen, children, and adults alike were indentured, apprenticed, transported as felons, kidnapped, or served as redemptioners. Though servitude was more multiracial and multicultural than slavery, involving people from numerous racial and ethnic backgrounds, far fewer books have been written about it. This fascinating new study of servitude in colonial America provides the first complete overview of the varied lives of the dispossessed in 17th- and 18th-century America, examining colonial American servitude in all of its forms.
Book Synopsis A Factious People by : Patricia U. Bonomi
Download or read book A Factious People written by Patricia U. Bonomi and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2015-06-04 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1971 and long out of print, this classic account of Colonial-era New York chronicles how the state was buffeted by political and sectional rivalries and by conflict arising from a wide diversity of ethnic and religious identities. New York’s highly volatile and contentious political life, Patricia U. Bonomi shows, gave rise to several interest groups for whose support political leaders had to compete, resulting in new levels of democratic participation.
