Book excerpt: The present doctoral thesis is about the universal theme of the relationship between architecture and city, more specifically, a research carried out on the question of the existing bond between the architectural form of collective housing and the urban form. Mexico City is the metropolis studied and within it two collective residential genres: the "casas de Vecindad" and the "Unidades l-labitacionales". The "casas de vecindad", commonly called "vecindades", were firstly built during the colonial period of the city, in the seventeenth century, and were subsequently built until the early twentieth century. Many of them still exist today in historical areas of the metropolis. Morphotogically, they are multi-family courtyard houses, comprising a group of dwellings around an uncovered space that in most cases is a "patio". The research undertaken on this type of housing starts off with an analysis of a case of study: the project of "Casas del Colegio de San Pedro y San Pablo", by Ignacio Castera of 1788. This project is reviewed as a theoretical model since it was never built. Consequently, a typotogical definition of the "casa de vecindad" is postulated that describes its elemental architectural features. For this purpose a number of academic statements that explain this type of dwelling are compiled and a set of floor plans of "vecindades" from different periods are classified. Subsequently, a few descriptions of the life in the "vecindad" are noted. Finally, one delves into the form of the city where these collective dwellings were developed, by examining the "Plano General de la Ciudad de México" by Diego Garcia Conde of 1793, and analysing its urban design and the elements that form it. This urban form is put in relation to the architecture of the "vecindades" and there are analogies between both. "Unidades Habitacionales" is the term chosen in this thesis to refer to the modern collective housing complexes that were either only planned or effectively built in the Mexican capital during the period comprised between the early 40's and the late 60's of the twentieth century. Research on this residential genre includes the analysis of three case studies: the project that was never built of the "Colonia Obrera de las Lomas de Becerra" by Hannes Meyer carried out in 1942; the "Centro Urbano Presidente Alemán", by Mario Pani built in 1949; and the "Unidad Independencia", by Alejandro Prieto and José Maria Gutiérrez inaugurated in 1960. Parting from these three examples, one describes their urban-architectural structure, the form in which they build the city. The study on the "vecindades" constitutes the centre of this academia work and the three cases of "unidades habitacionales" are recovered as a residential genre that went so far as to substitute the first. In the comparison of both genres, one observes persistence and changes in the form of building collective housing and the city. The "vecindades" were developed in the historical part of the city of Mexico and the "unidades habitacionales" constitute parts of its modern expansion, thus in this thesis one reflects on some urban parts that currently coexist in the Mexican metropolis.

Book excerpt: This handbook presents the great contemporary challenges facing cities and urban spaces in Latin America and the Caribbean. The content of this multidisciplinary book is organized into four large sections focusing on the histories and trajectories of urban spatial development, inequality and displacement of urban populations, contemporary debates on urban policies, and the future of the city in this region. Scholars of diverse origins and specializations analyze Latin American and Caribbean cities showing that, despite their diversity, they share many characteristics and challenges and that there is value in systematizing this knowledge to both understand and explain them better and to promote increasing equity and sustainability. The contributions in this handbook enhance the theoretical, empirical and methodological study of urbanization processes and urban policies of Latin America and the Caribbean in a global context, making it an important reference for scholars across the world. The book is designed to meet the interdisciplinary study and consultation needs of undergraduate and graduate students of architecture, urban design, urban planning, sociology, anthropology, political science, public administration, and more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does 'participatory' art and architecture shape social reality, or is it shaped by it? Shifting the ground of this debate, which tends to assume one or other direction of influence, this innovative book explores the inherently dialectic relationship between society and the built environment. At the same time, it strives for a historically conscious discussion of a very contemporary issue. Chapters rethink the top-down model of participation and audience activation of high modernism, from Alexander Dorner's immersive museum to Mies van der Rohe's 'room(s) for play'; investigate participation in spaces under political pressure, from exhibitions in bombed-out buildings in besieged Sarajevo (1992-5) to the art and organizing of revolution in Egypt (2012-13); draw historical parallels between modes of participation and the exercise of power that are seldom compared with one another, from sites of occupation in 1968 Mexico and 2011 Spain; finally creating links between cartography and feminism and between tourism and internet surveillance. With these juxtapositions of the aesthetic and the everyday, and the built and the mediated, new questions arise: is space formed once and for all, or is it the changeable product of changeable patterns of use? Does the aesthetic always correspond to the political, or might an aesthetically authoritarian space be conducive to social justice? In exploring these questions, this book looks at how participants themselves exert power, rather than being victimised or liberated from it.

Book excerpt: Cartography as an instrument for the analysis of urbanisation processes The speed, scale and scope of urbanisation have increased dramatically in recent decades. To decipher the rapidly changing urban territories across the planet, we need a radical shift in the analytical perspective on urbanisation. In this book, a transdisciplinary international research team presents an expanded vocabulary of urbanisation processes through a comparison of Tokyo, Hong Kong – Shenzhen – Dongguan, Kolkata, Istanbul, Lagos, Paris, Mexico City and Los Angeles. Based on a novel cartography and on detailed ethnographic and historical explorations, this book systematically analyses the diversity of responses to urgent contemporary urban challenges. It proposes a series of new concepts that allow us to assess the practical consequences of different urban strategies in everyday life. Essential book on urbanism New evaluation models for urbanisation processes Comprehensive analyses and illustrations of the urban patterns of international metropolises Comparison of urbanisation processes in eight metropolises around the world

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The untold story of the engineering behind the empire, showing how imperial Spain built upon existing infrastructure and hierarchies of the Inca, Aztec, and more, to further its growth. Sixteenth-century Spain was small, poor, disunited, and sparsely populated. Yet the Spaniards and their allies built the largest empire the world had ever seen. How did they achieve this? Felipe Fernández-Armesto and Manuel Lucena Giraldo argue that Spain’s engineers were critical to this venture. The Spanish invested in infrastructure to the advantage of local power brokers, enhancing the abilities of incumbent elites to grow wealthy on trade, and widening the arc of Spanish influence. Bringing to life stories of engineers, prospectors, soldiers, and priests, the authors paint a vivid portrait of Spanish America in the age of conquest. This is a dazzling new history of the Spanish Empire, and a new understanding of empire itself, as a venture marked as much by collaboration as oppression.

For the author, the house and the body are the same thing the house is our portrait and biography. The present texts are inspired mainly in 15th century Italian architect León Battista Alberti concepts of 'The house is a small city, as well as the city is a large house'. "Photographs by Patricia Lagarde are from the series La casa de Asterión, except those of pages 8 and 9, that are part of the series Desierto"-T.p. verso.
