Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation An examination of the intersection of religious and familial discourse over the course of two centuries. Households of Faith examines a variety of religious traditions with a particular focus on the way in which religious communities define gender identities. The authors explore the boundaries drawn in religious discourse between the private and public, offering a revisionist perspective on the theoretical framework of separate spheres. By analysing gender relations within the matrix of the family, they explore both the conflicts and interdependency of gender roles.

Book Synopsis Auguste Laurent and the Prehistory of Valence by : Mary Eunice Novitski
Download or read book Auguste Laurent and the Prehistory of Valence written by Mary Eunice Novitski and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study focuses on the French chemists of 1830-1858, and their roles in the development of organic chemistry and its eventual connectin with atomic and valence-bond theory, and uncovers new complexities in the thought processes that led to the concept of valence. The exploration of Laurent's early career reveals that this French chemist had proposed a hyposthesis to explain phenomena due to valence fifteen years before August Kekule's Exposition of the classic valence-bond theory in 1858. Laurent put forward a hypothesis supposing the dividibility of atoms at a time when such a theory was far removed from the possiblity of experimentation. Within the positivist philosophy which prevailed at the time, few besides him would have dared to advance such a hypothesis. Laurent's hypothesis influenced certain advances in his chemistry, and that of his close associate, Charles Gerhardt, and eventually these advances helped turn most chemists to atomism.

Book Synopsis The African Colonial State in Comparative Perspective by : Crawford Young
Download or read book The African Colonial State in Comparative Perspective written by Crawford Young and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this comprehensive and original study, a distinguished specialist and scholar of African affairs argues that the current crisis in African development can be traced directly to European colonial rule, which left the continent with a "singularly difficult legacy" that is unique in modern history. Crawford Young proposes a new conception of the state, weighing the different characteristics of earlier European empires (including those of Holland, Portugal, England, and Venice) and distilling their common qualities. He then presents a concise and wide-ranging history of colonization in Africa, from the era of construction through consolidation and decolonization. Young argues that several qualities combined to make the European colonial experience in Africa distinctive. The high number of nations competing for power around the continent and the necessity to achieve effective occupation swiftly yet make the colonies self-financing drove colonial powers toward policies of "ruthless extractive action." The persistent, virulent racism that established a distance between rulers and subjects was especially central to African colonial history. Young concludes by turning his sights to other regions of the once-colonized world, comparing the fates of former African colonies to their counterparts elsewhere. In tracing both the overarching traits and variations in African colonial states, he makes a strong case that colonialism has played a critical role in shaping the fate of this troubled continent.

Book Synopsis The Unfree French by : Richard Vinen
Download or read book The Unfree French written by Richard Vinen and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The swift and unexpected defeat of the French Army in 1940 shocked the nation. Two million soldiers were taken prisoner, six million civilians fled from the German army’s advance to join convoys of confused and terrified refugees, and only a few managed to escape the country. The vast majority of French people were condemned to years of subjugation under Nazi and Vichy rule. This compelling book investigates the impact of the occupation on the people of France and dispels any lingering notion that somehow, under the collaborating government of Marshal Pétain, life was quite tolerable for most French citizens. Richard Vinen describes the inescapable fear and the moral quandaries that permeated life in German-controlled France. Focusing on the experiences of the least privileged, he shows how chronic shortages, desperate compromises, fear of displacement, racism, and sadistic violence defined their lives. Virtually all adult males festered in POW camps or were sent to work in the Reich. With numerous enthralling anecdotes and a variety of maps and evocative photographs, The Unfree French makes it possible for the first time to understand how average people in France really lived from 1940 to 1945, why their experiences differed from region to region and among various groups, and why they made the choices they did during the occupation.
