Book excerpt: Molecular Spectroscopy: Modern Research explores the advances in several phases of research in molecular spectroscopy. This eight-chapter book commemorates the 25th anniversary of the annual Columbus Symposium on Molecular Structure and Spectroscopy, held in September, 1970. This book highlights the spectroscopic studies of molecular species in the gas phase and in matrices. Representative articles are also included that cover the applications of molecular studies in a wide variety of areas such as biophysics, astrophysical problems, and energy transfer processes. Other chapters describe the progress achieved in the technology of high resolution spectroscopy and the techniques and terminology of Lamb-dip spectroscopy. A comprehensive bibliography is included for most of the subjects discussed and this text concludes with tables of standard data listing secondary wavelength standards, fundamental constants, atomic masses, and conversion factors of interest to spectroscopists. Spectroscopists, chemists, and researchers will find this work invaluable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molecular Spectroscopy: Modern Research, Volume III is a collection of papers presented at the 40th Annual Molecular Spectroscopy Symposium, held at the Ohio State University. The contributors of this seven-chapter text cover the significant advances in molecular spectroscopic research and their application in chemistry. Chapters 1 and 2 discuss first the higher-order vibration-rotation interactions in molecules and then present formulas and an insight into the direction being taken in theoretical pursuits. Chapter 3 provides an extensive compilation of published intensity and collision broadening parameters derived from infrared spectra. This chapter also contains a detailed discussion using consistent notation of some of the methods commonly applied to extract such information from laboratory spectra. Chapter 4 examines a variety of laser systems and their application in investigations involving triatomic free radicals and ions, while chapter 5 considers the developments in the microwave spectroscopic studies on nonpolar molecules when their symmetry is reduced by isotopic substitution. Chapter 6 emphasizes the quasi-linear molecular problem to develop an appreciation of the symptoms of quasi-linearity and theoretical treatments thereof. This chapter also examines the increasing role of highly resolved spectra in the interpretation of various large-amplitude motions in molecules. Lastly, Chapter 7 describes the electric multipolar moments of hydrogen and its isotopes. Spectroscopists, chemists, and researchers will find this work invaluable.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has its or1g1n in a NATO Summer School organized from June 25 to July 7 1979, in Menton, France. The purpose of this School was a comparative study of the various aspects of vibra tional spectroscopy in molecular liquids and solids. This field has been rapidly expanding in the last decade; unfortunately, its development took place independently for liquids and for solids. In these circumstances, the comparison of the basic concepts and techniques used in these two branches of physics appeared as a necessity. The lectures given at the Menton Advanced Study Institute, as well as the exceptionally fruitful and lively discussions which followed them confirmed this point of view. The need of putting together these lectures, in the form of a monograph, clearly appeared during the ASI and the lecturers accepted to write down the material they presented at the Institute, improved thanks to the remarks of the participants. It is the result of this collective work which appears in the familiar Plenum Series.
Book Synopsis Spectroscopy of Biological Molecules: New Directions by : Jan Greve
Download or read book Spectroscopy of Biological Molecules: New Directions written by Jan Greve and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigation of the structure and function of biological molecules through spectroscopic methods is a field rich in revealing, clever techniques and demanding experiments. It is most gratifying to see that the basic concepts are applied to more and more complex systems, making feasible the study of the behaviour of whole systems in relation to molecular disturbances. The analytical potential of spectroscopy and spectroscopic imaging enables species identification of bacteria and tissue recognition. Clear opportunities for in vivo applications become apparent in the medical field. The methods developed in biophysics start to generate spin-off in the direction of biotechnology, where in previous years we have seen this happen for biochemical techniques. New directions are manifest. Tools are being developed to investigate the behaviour of single molecules in interaction with their environment. Individual interactions can now be investigated and individual molecules in complexes can be visualized. Processes that were previously unobservable as a result of ensemble averaging can now be investigated on a single molecule level. Completely new information with regard to molecular behaviour is obtained in this way. The insights amaze us and the prospect that this development will continue is exciting. The 8th European Conference on the Spectroscopy of Biological Molecules is proud to have contributed to the dissemination of these new directions. This proceedings book is an appropriate reflection of the progress obtained so far in the spectroscopy of biological molecules.

Book Synopsis Laser Applications in Medicine and Biology by : M.L. Wolbarsht

This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The diversity of the chapters presented in this volume illustrates not only the many applications of lasers, but also the fact that, in many cases, these are not new uses of lasers, but rather improvements of laser techniques already widely accepted in both research and clinical situations. Biological reactions to some special aspects of laser exposure continue to show new effects, which have implications for the ever-present topic of laser safety. Such biological reactions are included in fields of research which depend on properties of electromagnetic radiation exposure only possible with lasers, for example, the short pulses necessary for the temperature-jump experiments reviewed by Reiss: Speciality lasers, such as the transverse excitation atmospheric (TEA) or excimer lasers, add new wavelengths and pulse domains to those already available for biological application. A description of these new types of lasers by Osgood is included to indicate new possibilities for future use and to avoid limiting our coverage to well-developed present-day applications. Hillenkamp and Kaufmann describe a microprobe mass spectrograph for analysis of the minute amounts of material evaporated by a laser pulse. The analytical possibilities of this instrument are far-reaching, and some of the various results are described to illustrate the power of their method, as well as to show the types of problems that are suitable for it. The initial steps in photosynthesis have become the subject of intensive investigation.

Book Synopsis Strategies and Advanced Techniques for Marine Pollution Studies by : C.S. Giam

This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A distinction between contamination and pollution is useful when we wish to consider what strategies to adopt in researching the impact of anthropogenic activities on the marine environment. Contamination strictly refers to the chemical burden imposed on the system and is evaluated in terms of the concentrations of chemical compounds in various abiotic (e. g water, suspended particulate matter, sediments) and biotic (plant and animal, pelagic and benthic) components. The concept of pollution, on the other hand, infers an assessment of biological response to the measured levels of contamination. This response may be measured at various levels of biological organisation, from molecular events within the cell to changes in such ecosystem properties as nutrient flux and biological productivity. Such measures of biological response need not infer any value judgements regarding putative damage or disturbance to the natural systems, although the biologist will usually have in mind a reference point of normality with which to compare the measured response; departure from this "normality" may then provide a quantitiative index of disturbance. The challenge to scientists engaged in research into marine contamination and pollution is to weld the chemical and biological elements together (always with reference also to the physical features of the environment) so as to provide a coherent framework for the quantitative evaluation of environmental response.
