It is also probable that this other Saint Francis, partly out of admiration for his illustrious compatriot of Assisi and partly from a compelling urge to be superlative in all things, chose the title in opposition to the Franciscans, the Fratres Minori, l who had previously adopted this style taken from Saint Matthew, XXIII, 8. The title "Minim" was confirmed in these words" ... eosque Eremitos Ordinis Minimorum Fratrum Eremitarum F. Francesci de Paula in posterum nuncupari," taken from the Papal Bull, Meritis religiosae vitae, of 26 February, 1493. The earliest reference to the Order in France is in a fragment preserved in the Bibliotheque de l'Arsenal called, La regle et vie de Frere Franfois, pauvre et humble hermite de Paule, laquelle donne a tous ses 2 freres voulant entrer et vivre en son ordre. The dating of this manuscript should be accepted with considerable reserve; it bears a clearly legible "1474," although it seems most unlikely that any reference to an Order occurred before the Bull of 1493 or that any Rule appeared in French before the Founder's visit to Louis XI in 1483. 3 The fame of Francis and his reputation as a "guerisseur" had reached the French court where Louis XI was sick and dying; the King summoned him to the chateau of Le Plessis-Ies-Tours, but it required the intervention of the Pope to make the hermit undertake the journey

Book excerpt: The Admirable Secret of the Rosary is a book about the Holy Rosary written by Saint Louis de Montfort a French priest and Catholic saint who died in 1716. The English translation of the book bears the Imprimatur of Archbishop Thomas E. Molloy of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn. The book revolves around the views of the rosary and the power of the rosary and consists of a number of short sections called Roses each being about one or two pages long. Each Rose discusses a separate viewpoint about the Rosary and may be addressed to a different cross section of the audience, e.g. priests versus lay people.

Book excerpt: THIS little work is compiled, partly from "The Theology of the Holy Rosary," of the French Dominican, Father Chery, partly from "The Complete Rosary Book," published. by a Dominican Father in England. Several Rosary books have already been published in this country, but, whilst some have omitted very important nlatters with regard to the Dominican Rosary, others have confounded that great Rosary confraternity with a popular little devotion, called the Living Rosary. The Living Rosary was lately organized by a lady in France. It offers no bond of union, except that of fifteen persons, which bond is often broken. The Dominican Rosary comes down to us from the thirteenth century. It was revealed to one of God's most illustrious Saints. It unites its millions of members in one great confraternity-one powerful apostleship of prayer-enriched with the most abundant favors of the Church, and sharing in all the suffrages of the three great branches of the Donlinican Order. Since its establishment, the Dominican Rosary has taken possession of the world. There is no devotion more ancient, there is no devotion more widespread, there is no devotion enriched with so many indulgences. We know of no one eminent for sanctity since the days of St. Dominic, who was not a Rosarian, and devotedly attached to saying the beads. The Rosary, is a solid devotion, most pleasing to God and to our Immaculate Mother, drawing down the choicest graces of Heaven on all who practise it with fidelity. Dear Immaculate Mother, it was to increase thy children's love for thee, to make the treasures of thy cherished Rosary still more known and more appreciated, that this little work was compiled. Deign to bless this offering, which is placed at thy feet, and obtajn for all thy children an increase of devotion to thee, and an advancement in those virtues which thy Rosary inculcates. An excellent book for First Saturday Devotions

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IT is a long-established custom on missions conducted by the Dominican Fathers to give each evening a short instruction on the Rosary previous to reciting the beads, which are always said in common before the night sermon. This instruction has a two-fold object: to make known to the faithful the origin and efficacy of this great devotion, so dear to the heart of our Immaculate Mother, and to inspire them with greater fervor, devotion and confidence in reciting the Rosary. For many years it was the privilege of the writer of this humble book to give those Rosary talks. No longer able to engage in mission work, some of his esteemed friends in the priesthood have urged him to prepare a course of Rosary talks for the press, in the belief that they would not only be useful to Directors of Rosary Societies, but would also be an aid to the faithful in meditating on the mysteries of our Mother's cherished Rosary. Another motive prompted the writer to prepare these considerations for the press. He feels strongly urged to remind both priest and people of a sacred duty which they owe to God, to themselves, and to their neighbor. During his mission life he of ten con trasted the presen t leniency of priests to penitents with the rigor manifested by the early Church in giving canonical penances to her erring children. Yet we know she has not changed her doctrine, nor has God changed in His justice, nor has sin lost its malice. There is, however, a marked change in the Church's discipline. She has considered our weakness, and our unwillingness to perform pu blic penances; and, mindful of the wonderful power bestowed on her through the keys given to her first Visible Head, St. Peter, and through him to hIs successors, she opens to us the infinite treasures of the meri ts of Christ and of His saints, and urges us to gain through them indulgences to satisfy the debt due divine justice for our sins. Yet, when we give our light sacramental penances to our people, often in re gravi, do we urge them to supply for our leniency by gaining indulgences? Do we ourselves appreciate as we should the necessity of gaining indulgences, and of aiding poor sufferers whom the law of charity binds us to assist? In an Appendix to the present work, will be found a treatise on indulgences, with a list of those which all the faithful may easily gain. We earnestly recommend its perusal to the devout reader. St. Alphonsus would have priests always labor for God and for souls-during life by their active ministry, after death by their writings. Soon to lay down the sweet labor of life, this book is lovingly placed by the writer at Mary's feet, and he asks her to accept its dedication, to protect its readers and to pray for himself now and at the hour of his death.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work will be excellent for those who wish to truly make the First Saturdays advised by Our Lady of Fatima, as an essential requirement is fifteen minutes meditation on the Mysteries of the Rosary in addition to reciting a third part of the Rosary. THE name of the world-renowned preacher, Father Monsabre, the author of the Meditations now presented to English readers, is a sufficient recommendation of their utility and intrinsic value. The devotion of the HOLY ROSARY has always been a favorite religious exercise among English-speaking Catholics, and it becomes more and more popular in these countries according as Providence has improved our condition and multiplied our numbers in the present century. Hence we offer these admirable Meditations on the mysteries of the Holy Rosary to our co-religionists of all classes with respectful confidence. In order to clear away all doubts as to the person holding authority to establish canonically, in any mission or parish, the Confraternity of the Holy Rosary, it may be well to remark that this jurisdiction is vested solely in the Master-General of the Dominican Order, or in his vicar when the general is absent from Rome. This is manifest from a great number of Papal decrees issued on the subject during the last six hundred years. Special attention is called to two decrees of Pope Innocent XI., issued respectively on the 18th of April, 1678, and on the 31st of July, 1679. The same fact is elaborately and definitively explained in the Bull of Pope Benedict XIII. bearing date of the 20th of May, 1727. Hence, that the confraternity may be canonically established, application must be made to the Master-General of the Dominicans in Rome; and this is usually done through the Provincials of the different nations in which the Order of St. Dominic exists. The explanation hereby given has for its object the securing to all devout clients of the Rosary whatever indulgences and spiritual benefits may have been, at any time, attached to this great devotion. Father Monsabre has published seven series of "Meditations" on the Rosary, only three of which we give at present to English readers. The success of our first venture will insure the early publication of the remainder. The French work has gone through twelve editions. We attach to onr little volume the Encyclical of our present Sovereign Pontiff, Leo XIII., given on the 1st of September, 1883. This magnificent document relating to the Rosary, along with his other letters to the same effect, may be said to constitute a new epoch in the history of this devotion. THE ROSARY is a form of vocal prayer accompanied with a meditation upon one of the fifteen mysteries, distributed into three series the Joyful, the Sorrowful, and the Glorious Mysteries. The Joyful Mysteries are the Annunciation, the Visitation, the Nativity, the Presentation in the Temple, and the Finding of the Child Jesus in the Temple. The Sorrowful Mysteries are the Agony in the Garden, the Scourging at the Pillar, the Crowning with Thorns, the Carriage of the Cross, the Crucifixion. The Glorious Mysteries are the Resurrection of Our Lord, the Ascension, the Coming of the Holy Ghost, the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin, and Her Coronation. The sacred art of the Rosary consists in reciting devoutly the prescribed prayers, whilst the soul, piously occupied in meditation on the Mysteries, conteluplates and draws fruit from the various circumstances in which our Blessed Saviour and His Most Holy Mother appear.

We want to see them and hear their voices. We want to be on the scene in the stable where Jesus was born, in the Temple as Mary enters proudly carrying her baby, at the foot of the cross when Jesus dies. Set the stage in your own mind for these episodes, one at a time, in the lives of Jesus and Mary. Consider their immediate surroundings, their robes and veils and the sandals on their feet. Try to conjure up a room where Mary sleeps, a simple bed, a chair her father made, and a rag rug her mother wove.

Book excerpt: Mary's House traces the history of a pile of sacred, forgotten stones that for the first time provide precious clues to the life Mary lived after the crucifixion. The site in Ephesus, Turkey, where it is believed that John, the beloved disciple, took Mary after the crucifixion, is revered today as a shrine for millions of Christians and Muslims. Pope Paul VI and Pope John Paul II both have made special pilgrimages to Ephesus to worship at the site, which Pope Pius XII described by saying, "This holy house is unique throughout the world."
