The descriptive data presented here offer an excellent overview of diseases and disability and their impact on older women. For investigators, the monograph is a resource for those who would like to use similar questionnaires and examination procedures. It gives policy makers ready access to timely and detailed data they may need for today's discussion of long-term care and other issues affecting frail older people and their families. Finally, data presented here are a testament to the ability of older women with disabilities to function in the real world, as exemplified in Chapter 3 on adaptation to disability and in Chapter 5 on aspects of daily life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive approach to the perspectives, lived experiences, and socio-cultural beliefs of Indigenous scholars regarding disabilities through a distinctions-based approach. Indigenous people demonstrate considerable knowledge in a multitude of capacities in spite of legal, monetary, social, economic, health, and political inequalities that they experience within from administrative authorities whether health, education, or governments. By including various knowledge systems related to social-cultural, traditional governance, spirituality, educational, and self-representation within a communal understanding, the knowledge brought forth will be a combination of information from within/communal and outwards/infusion by Indigenous teachers, scholars, academics, and professionals who aim to combat the negative effects of disability labels and policies that have regulated Indigenous peoples. Comprised of five sections: The power, wisdom, knowledge, and lived experiences of Elders Reframing the narrative – Navigating self-representation Learning from within – Including traditional knowledge Challenging colonial authority – Infusing regional ideals and concepts Interpretations, narratives, and lived experiences of grassroots teachers and social service providers It will be an asset to those who seek out a deeper understanding of the complexity of Indigenous people and their knowledge, including anyone who deals with predominantly non-Indigenous mindsets and barriers to education. Courses on disability studies, Indigenous studies, social work, health, education, and development studies will all benefit from this book.
Book Synopsis Engendering Revolution by : Rachel Elfenbein
Download or read book Engendering Revolution written by Rachel Elfenbein and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2019-12-01 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1999, Venezuela became the first country in the world to constitutionally recognize the socioeconomic value of housework and enshrine homemakers’ social security. This landmark provision was part of a larger project to transform the state and expand social inclusion during Hugo Chávez’s presidency. The Bolivarian revolution opened new opportunities for poor and working-class—or popular—women’s organizing. The state recognized their unpaid labor and maternal gender role as central to the revolution. Yet even as state recognition enabled some popular women to receive public assistance, it also made their unpaid labor and organizing vulnerable to state appropriation. Offering the first comprehensive analysis of this phenomenon, Engendering Revolution demonstrates that the Bolivarian revolution cannot be understood without comprehending the gendered nature of its state-society relations. Showcasing field research that comprises archival analysis, observation, and extensive interviews, these thought-provoking findings underscore the ways in which popular women sustained a movement purported to exalt them, even while many could not access social security and remained socially, economically, and politically vulnerable.
