Book Synopsis The Second Epistle to the Corinthians by : Handley C.G. Moule

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Handley C. G. Moule (1841-1920), evangelical Anglican bishop and academic, was one of the foremost New Testament scholars in the Church of England in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The author of more than sixty books and pamphlets, Moule followed in the English scholar-bishop tradition of Lightfoot and Westcott. The H. C. G. Moule Collection brings together volumes of commentary on the Pauline epistles. Moule was the first principal at Ridley Hall Theological College, Cambridge, as well as the Norrisian Professor of Divinity. His writings are informative, yet accessible, making them useful both to scholars and laity. The works included in this collection contain verse-by-verse exegesis on Romans, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon. Moule also includes practical lessons for daily living, gleaned from the epistles. Each of his works provides notes, indexes, and appendices to make these studies even more valuable.
Book Synopsis Divining the Woman of Endor by : J. Kabamba Kiboko
Download or read book Divining the Woman of Endor written by J. Kabamba Kiboko and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-02-23 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of the language of divination in the Hebrew Bible, particularly in 1 Samuel 28:3-25-the oft-called “Witch of Endor” passage. Kiboko contends that much of the vocabulary of divination in this passage and beyond has been mistranslated in authorized English and other translations used in Africa and in scholarly writings. Kiboko argues that the woman of Endor is not a witch. The woman of Endor is, rather, a diviner, much like other ancient Near Eastern and modern African diviners. She resists an inner-biblical conquest theology and a monologic authoritarian view of divination to assist King Saul by various means, including invoking the spirit of a departed person, Samuel. Kiboko carries out a Hebrew word-study shaped by the theories of Mikhail M. Bakhtin regarding the utterance, heteroglossia, and dialogism in order to understand the designative, connotative, emotive, and associative meanings of the many divinatory terms in the Hebrew Bible. She then examines 1 Samuel 28 and a number of prior translations thereof, using the ideological framework of African-feminist-postcolonial biblical interpreters and translation theories to uncover the hidden ideology or transcript of these translations. Finally, using African contextual/cultural hermeneutics and cross-cultural translation theory, Kiboko offers new English, French, and Kisanga translations of this passage that are both faithful to the original text and more appropriate to an inculturated-liberation African Christian hermeneutic, theology, and praxis.
Book Synopsis Sartre, Jews, and the Other by : Manuela Consonni
Download or read book Sartre, Jews, and the Other written by Manuela Consonni and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-02-24 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The starting point for this compilation is the wish to rethink the concept of antisemitism, race and gender in light of Sartre’s pioneering Réflexions sur la Question Juive seventy years after its publication. The book gathers texts by prestigious scholars from different disciplines in the Humanities and the Social Sciences, with the objective or revisiting this work locating it within the setting of two other pioneering – and we argue, related – publications, namely Simone De Beauvoir’s Le deuxième sexe of 1949 and Franz Fanon’s Peau noire et masques blancs of 1952. This particular and original standpoint sheds new light on the different meanings and political functions of the concept of antisemitism in a political and historical context marked by the post-modern concepts of multi-ethnicity and multiculturalism.
Book Synopsis The Disobedient Spirits and Christian Baptism by : Bo Reicke
Download or read book The Disobedient Spirits and Christian Baptism written by Bo Reicke and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2005-02-21 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bo Ivar Reicke (1914Ð1987) was born and schooled in Stockholm, Sweden. In 1933 he matriculated in the Faculty of Arts of the University of Stockholm, transferring, however, in 1935 to the University of Uppsala, where in 1937 he received his degree in the areas of the history of religions and classical Greek and philosophy. From 1938 he continued his studies in the Faculty of Theology of the same university. Graduating in 1941, he became ordained in December of the same year as a minister of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sweden. He immediately continued with doctoral studies, choosing the exegesis of the Old and New Testaments as his field of research. In May 1946 he presented in print and publicly defended his dissertation, The Disobedient Spirits and Christian Baptism: A Study of 1 Pet. III.19 and Its Context, [Acta Seminarii Neotestamentici Upsaliensis Edenda Curavit A. Fridrichsen, 13] (Lund 1946). In the official statement to the university, his New Testament teacher, Professor A. Fridrichsen, describes the dissertation as a weighty contribution to the solution of an old exegetical problem and goes on to recommend the author for a position on the Uppsala Faculty. In the following years, Reicke taught New Testament exegesis as assistant professor in his home faculty. In September of 1953 he received the call of the Faculty of Theology of the University of Basel, Switzerland, to fill the chair in New Testament. Moving to Basel with his family, Reicke served there for thirty years until his retirement in 1984. In addition to lecturing around the world and training about forty doctoral students, he was the author of a number of books (see below). Still actively writing and lecturing, Bo Reicke died in Basel in May of 1987.
