Book excerpt: Esta tesis doctoral es un estudio del movimiento ecológico americano llamado Ecología Profunda. Ecología Profunda y Educación constra de tres partes, organizadas en cinco capítulos. La primera parte tiene carácter contextual y su objetivo es el de ofrecer al lector el entorno intelectual e histórico en el que surge la Ecología Profunda, otorgando prioridad a la historia del movimiento medioambiental en Estados Unidos (espacio principal de expansión de este movimiento). La segunda parte se dedica en exclusiva a la Ecología Profunda: al momento en el que surge (1972) con su inicial descripción de contenidos, a su llegada y difusión en América, a la creación de su Plataforma en 1984 con la explicación detallada de sus ocho puntos, a las críticas recibidas y a las respuestas y comentarios a éstas. La tercera parte presenta la biografía del noruego Arne Naess, fundador de la Ecología Profunda, y reflexiona sobre su personalidad y sobre sus características intelectuales. En esta parte se estudian también contenidos típicamente naessianos que subyacen a la filosofía de la Ecología Profunda, y que facilitan su comprensión, como el concepto de sí-mismo ecológico y el rol de los sentimientos/emociones en la filosofía de Naess. Esta parte finaliza con la presentación de tres aplicaciones tecnológicas contemporáneas que compaginan el beneficio al medioambiente con una alta rentabilidad económica. Con ellas se ha intentado mostrar que el progreso tecnológico-económico y el cuidado y mejora del medioambiente no son incompatibles. El trabajo concluye con los comentarios de la autora sobre la postura de la Ecología Profunda en relación con sus dos aspectos más controvertidos: el problema poblacional y el progreso tecnológico. Para finalizar, se apunta brevemente a la transcendencia espiritual de la Ecología Profunda, y a la influencia actual del nuevo modo de pensar ecológico.
