Book Synopsis The Annexation of Eupen-Malmedy by : Vincent O'Connell
Download or read book The Annexation of Eupen-Malmedy written by Vincent O'Connell and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 2017-11-17 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the history of Belgium’s annexation of the former German territories of Eupen and Malmedy during the interwar period. Focusing on Herman Baltia’s transitory regime and Belgium’s ambivalence about the fate of its new territories, the book charts the strained relations between Baltia’s regime and Brussels, the regime’s path to dissolution, and the failed retrocession of the territory to Germany. Through close analysis of primary source material, Vincent O’Connell investigates the efforts of Baltia’s provisional government to assimilate the region’s inhabitants into Belgium. The ultimate failure of that assimilation, he argues, may be traced back not only to incessant pro-German agitation, but to flawed Belgian policy from the outset. Framed in the context of a post-Versailles Europe, the book offers an interesting case study not only of the ebbs and flows of international politics across the frontier zones of Europe in the interwar years, but of how populations react to changes in national sovereignty.

Book excerpt: German violation of Belgian neutrality escalated the 1914 hostilities into a world war, and disagreement about Belgium's future did much to block a compromise peace. In the postwar decade, Belgium's role as intermediary between France and Britain was pivotal, and its primary concerns reveal mush about postwar Europe's search for stability. Yet, at the Paris Peace Conference, Belgium emerged with little to show for its suffering. Originally published 1981. Book Synopsis The Heimat Abroad by : K. Molly O'Donnell
Download or read book The Heimat Abroad written by K. Molly O'Donnell and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2010-02-22 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Germans have been one of the most mobile and dispersed populations on earth. Communities of German speakers, scattered around the globe, have long believed they could recreate their Heimat (homeland) wherever they moved, and that their enclaves could remain truly German. Furthermore, the history of Germany is inextricably tied to Germans outside the homeland who formed new communities that often retained their Germanness. Emigrants, including political, economic, and religious exiles such as Jewish Germans, fostered a nostalgia for home, which, along with longstanding mutual ties of family, trade, and culture, bound them to Germany. The Heimat Abroad is the first book to examine the problem of Germany's long and complex relationship to ethnic Germans outside its national borders. Beyond defining who is German and what makes them so, the book reconceives German identity and history in global terms and challenges the nation state and its borders as the sole basis of German nationalism. Krista O'Donnell is Associate Professor of History, William Paterson University. Nancy Reagin is Professor of History, Pace University. Renete Bridenthal is Emerita Professor of History, Brooklyn College of the City University of New York.
Book Synopsis Frontier Regions in Western Europe by : Malcolm Anderson
Download or read book Frontier Regions in Western Europe written by Malcolm Anderson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-23 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1983. The problem of defining a frontier region is a leitmotiv of this collection of articles but each perspective requires its own definition. The definition of regions has long been controversial and the attempt to define a sub-set of them - frontier regions - according to precise geographical or socio-economic criteria can be useful only for limited purposes as, for example, in the study of transfrontier labour markets. This text looks at the borders regions in Western Europe, in terms of transfrontier co-operation, geographical definitions, physical planning, economics and political authority.

Book Synopsis The Watch on the Rhine by : Margaret Pawley
Download or read book The Watch on the Rhine written by Margaret Pawley and published by I.B. Tauris. This book was released on 2007-10-24 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rhineland, scene of European conflict for generations, remained an intensely contentious area following the end of the hostilities of World War I. Under the Treaty of Versailles the Rhineland remained German but was to be occupied by Allied troops for fifteen years -- a controversial and uncomfortable situation which inevitably caused great friction between rival European powers. The Watch on the Rhinedeals with this eventful period of German history and the actions of the Inter-Allied Rhineland Control Commission, which was set up to administer the Rhineland from its headquarters at Coblenz. Drawing on personal memories of her own years spent in the British zone and on the Annual Reports of the Commission, in which her father played a prominent part, Margaret Pawley provides a unique insider view of the work of the Commission up to its disbandment. She vividly evokes the atmosphere of growing resentment at the continuing occupation of German soil and the rise of Hitler that was to lead inexorably to his re-militarisation of the Rhineland in 1936.The Watch on the Rhineis the first book to examine fully the contributions of all four occupying forces and offers a compelling and comprehensive history of a critical phase of European history.

Download or read book The Many Faces of Clio written by Q. Edward Wang and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2007 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in Germany, Georg Iggers escaped from Nazism to the United States in his adolescence where he became one of the most distinguished scholars of European intellectual history and the history of historiography. In his lectures, delivered all over the world, and in his numerous books, translated into many languages, Georg Iggers has reshaped historiography and indefatigably promoted cross-cultural dialogue. This volume reflects the profound impact of his oeuvre. Among the contributors are leading intellectual historians but also younger scholars who explore the various cultural contexts of modern historiography, focusing on changes of European and American scholarship as well as non-Western historical writing in relation to developments in the West. Addressing these changes from a transnational perspective, this well-rounded volume offers an excellent introduction to the field, which will be of interest to both established historians and graduate students.
