La première partie situe le lieu et les conditions socio-historiques de production des réalités dites ethnocentristes. La deuxième partie, consacrée à une réflexion épistémologique, fait ressortir que les différences socio-symboliques (cultures, ethnies, pratiques rituelles, etc.) Ne sont pas des objets en soi, des données objectives, mais des constructions sociales. Nous explicitons les liens organiques qu'entretient l'idéologie ethnocentriste dominante avec les productions intellectuelles (discours scientifiques, politiques, etc.) Des identités socioculturelles. L'analyse de notre corpus principal (interview de dix informateurs mauriciens), dans la troisième partie, confirme nos hypothèses relatives aux actes identitaires : l'individu n'est pas un simple agent du procès d'enculturation, ni une courroie de transmission de l'idéologie dominante ; son savoir social ne peut être réduit à un programme ethnique intériorisé. La représentation de soi et des autres (unité dialectique de l'intériorisation de l'extériorité et l'extériorisation de l'intériorité dans des conditions interactionnelles données) n'est pas un décodage automatique de signes univoques, mais implique un procès de (re)production d'un ensemble de rapports imagoiques, de constructions socio-symboliques qui n'excluent pas l'activité pensante, la praxis interactionnelle des acteurs sociaux.
