Innegable es la existencia de algunos precedentes concretos a lo largo del siglo XVI, pero no será hasta la siguiente centuria cuando se afiance la apuesta de los editores de literatura por el género teatral. Gracias a ellos se popularizaron en todos los estratos sociales las partes de comedias (a menudo vendidas también como desglosadas para llegar a todos los bolsillos) y, más tarde, las sueltas. En consecuencia, en el contexto del éxito literario de la comedia nueva, no basta con tener en cuenta las representaciones para entender en toda su magnitud la repercusión del teatro áureo. Es necesario prestar atención, además, a la otra vía principal de transmisión de los textos: la difusión impresa. Ambos aspectos son determinantes en la evolución de la comedia y, aunque en menor medida, de los otros géneros del siglo XVII. Por ello, para alcanzar una visión completa de lo que supuso el fenómeno teatral en el Barroco, es necesario un acercamiento que no olvide ninguno de los dos fenómenos. Para nuestra tesis doctoral, en consecuencia, hemos llevado a cabo precisamente un amplio estudio del menos conocido de esos dos ámbitos. Nuestra intención ha sido, pues, la de capturar en una imagen de conjunto los principales hitos de esa segunda vida de los textos teatrales. Para tal fin, hemos centrado nuestro trabajo en la difusión y el comercio del libro teatral del siglo XVII, entendiéndolo como uno de los objetos de consumo más característicos de su época.
