Book excerpt: Giochino Rossini: A Research and Information Guide is designed as a tool for those beginning to study the life and works of Gioachino Rossini as well as for those who wish to explore beyond the established biographies and commentaries. The first edition was published in 2001, and represented a survey of some 878 publications relating to the composer’s life and works. The second edition is revised and updated to include the more than 150 books and articles written in the field of Rossini studies since then. Contents range from sources published in the early decades of the nineteenth century to works currently in progress. Book Synopsis Popular Theatres of Nineteenth Century France by : John McCormick
Download or read book Popular Theatres of Nineteenth Century France written by John McCormick and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the only book to provide an account of how popular theatre developed from the fairground booths of the eighteenth century to become a vehicle of mass entertainment in the following century. Whereas other studies offer a traditional approach to the theatres of high culture, John McCormick takes the role of impartial historian, uncovering the popular theatres of the boulevards, suburbs and fairgrounds. He focuses on the social and economic context in which vaudevilles, pantomimes and melodramas were performed, and explores the audiences who enjoyed them.

This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 2003, Charles Edward Horn's Memoirs of His Father and Himself is an annotated collection of the memoirs of Charles Edward Horn. They include an account of Horn’s father, Charles Frederick Horn, who arrived penniless in London in 1782 and rose to become music master to Queen Charlotte. Today he is most remembered for his pioneering publications of J.S. Bach’s music in England. Charles Edward Horn’s memoir covers his activities in England and Ireland and provide numerous details of English musical life in the Georgian era not previously known to scholars. They are supplemented in this book by transcripts of four other autobiographical accounts of the Horns, a summary of their extant correspondence and a chronology of their activities.
Download or read book The Conscience of Humankind written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-22 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The traumatic experiences of persecution and genocide have changed traditional views of literature. The discussion of historical truth versus aesthetic autonomy takes an unexpected turn when confronted with the experiences of the victims of the Holocaust, the Gulag Archipelago, the Cultural Revolution, Apartheid and other crimes against humanity. The question is whether - and, if so, to what extent - literary imagination may depart from historical truth. In general, the first reactions to traumatic historical experiences are autobiographical statements, written by witnesses of the events. However, the second and third generations, the sons and daughters of the victims as well as of the victimizers, tend to free themselves from this generic restriction and claim their own way of remembering the history of their parents and grandparents. They explore their own limits of representation, and feel free to use a variety of genres; they turn to either realist or postmodernist, ironic or grotesque modes of writing.

Book Synopsis Byron, Napoleon, J.C. Hobhouse, and the Hundred Days by : Peter Cochran
Download or read book Byron, Napoleon, J.C. Hobhouse, and the Hundred Days written by Peter Cochran and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-09-10 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Napoleon was, after his defeat at Leipzig, “granted” the island of Elba to rule. He soon found this unsatisfactory, and, early in 1815, left for the south of France, and marched on Paris to some acclamation. He was, all too quickly, defeated at Waterloo. Observing all this was Byron’s friend J.C. Hobhouse, an ardent Bonapartist. Byron, who posed as one, never answered his letters from the thick of things in Paris. This book is structured in four layers, and begins with an essay about Byron and Napoleon, which is then followed by Byron’s poems about Napoleon and Hobhouse’s diary. Hobhouse’s letters conclude the volume. Most of Hobhouse’s diary has never been published. The book is published, aptly, on the bicentenary of The Hundred Days.
