Book Synopsis The Story of the Storyteller by : Jean O'Bryan-Knight
Download or read book The Story of the Storyteller written by Jean O'Bryan-Knight and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-04-12 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the history of an engaging character, a writer, who acts as the narrator and protagonist of three of Vargas Llosa's novels. In La tía Julia y el escribidor he recalls his apprenticeship, in Historia de Mayta he reflects upon the practice of his craft, and in El hablador he ponders the significance of his vocation. That this fictional character closely resembles his flesh-and-blood creator only adds to his allure. Because the three novels in question have such strong structural and thematic links, it proves quite helpful to conceive of them as a trilogy. Indeed, the connections are so pronounced that a significant synergistic effect results from considering the three together. It is this effect that this volume brings light as it analyzes how each novel functions as a separate entity, how these entities are integrated into a greater whole, and how this whole fits into the wider picture of the Peruvian author's long and prolific literary career. As students and scholars alike will find, thinking in terms of a trilogy greatly enhances our understanding and appreciation of Vargas Llosa's rich narrative.
Book Synopsis Infertilities by : Robin Truth Goodman
Download or read book Infertilities written by Robin Truth Goodman and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In today's global market, ideas about family, femininity, and reproduction are traded on as actively as any currency or stock. The connection has a history, one rooted in a conception of feminine identities invented through a science interwoven with the pursuit of empire, the accumulation of goods, and the furtherance of power. It is this history that Robin Truth Goodman exposes in her analysis of literary and political representations of female infertility from the mid-nineteenth century to our day." "Goodman takes Darwin's studies on sterility between species as her starting point, exploring evolutionary science as the intersection of a colonial worldview based on class struggle and the pathologizing of female identities that fall outside of reproductive normalcy. She then examines how Joseph Conrad constructs a vision of feminism as a product of miscegenation, how Alejo Carpentier and Mario Vargas Llosa deploy female figures of miscegenation to recast Latin American literature as "difference," and how ecological devastation in the Brazilian Amazon is envisioned through failures in Indian marriage. Locating points of conjunction between queer, feminist, and postcolonial theories, Infertilities points to the role of lesbian representation and reproductive politics in ongoing critiques of globalism."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays included in Talking Books with Mario Vargas Llosa celebrate Mario Vargas Llosa's visits to the City College of New York, the creation of the Cátedra Vargas Llosa in his honor, and the interests of the Peruvian author in reading and books. This volume contains previously unpublished material by Vargas Llosa himself, as well as by novelists and literary critics associated with the Cátedra. This collection offers readers an opportunity to learn about Vargas Llosa's body of work through multiple perspectives: his own and those of eminent fiction writers and important literary critics. The book offers significant analysis and rich conversation that bring to life many of the Nobel Laureate's characters and provide insights into his writing process and imagination. As the last surviving member of the original group of writers of the Latin American Boom--which included Gabriel García Márquez, Carlos Fuentes, and Julio Cortázar--Vargas Llosa endures as a literary icon because his fiction has remained fresh and innovative. His prolific works span many different themes and subgenres. A combination of literary analyses and anecdotal contributions in this volume reveal the little-known human and intellectual dimensions of Vargas Llosa the writer and Vargas Llosa the man.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Madame Bovary was one of the most influential literary achievements of the nineteenth century and gained immediate notoriety through its questioning of marriage, sex, and the role of women. Stephen Heath shows how this landmark text captures and articulates a fundamental experience of the post-romantic, commercial-industrial, emotional-democratic period. He explains how Madame Bovary represents Flaubert's intense personal engagement with the tragedy of bourgeois culture, while at the same time exemplyfying the author's commitment to the impersonality of Art and the transcendence of style. The novel is set in its literary and historical context and there is a guide to further reading.
Book Synopsis Contemporary Spanish Women's Narrative and the Publishing Industry by : Christine Henseler
Download or read book Contemporary Spanish Women's Narrative and the Publishing Industry written by Christine Henseler and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As in other countries, the effects of commercialization in Spain are changing the direction of publishing. Arguing that women face a particularly complex situation because the inclusion of their work is still considered a novelty in a male-dominated field, Christine Henseler examines the strategies of Spanish women authors in the face of market forces. In a consumer economy that places books in supermarkets and mega-bookstores and in which novels are promoted and read more for entertainment than for their literary merit, women's books tend to be more highly regarded when they cater to feminist, erotic, or commercial niche markets. Henseler examines the visual creation of the seductive female body inside and outside the texts and the verbal application of this female figure on a narrative level in the works of authors including Paloma Díaz-Mas, Lourdes Ortiz, Cristina Peri Rossi, Esther Tusquets, Almudena Grandes, and Lucía Etxebarría. She looks at novels of seduction, award-winning novels, and novels sold on the basis of an author's prior reputation, as well as advertisements, literary prizes, and reviews. She also draws on interviews with authors to provide insider views of contemporary Spanish publishing. Contemporary Spanish Women's Narrative and the Publishing Industry reveals the ways women writers are reacting -- both textually and promotionally--to the changing demands of the publishing industry and the construction of a literary canon.
Book Synopsis Fictional Environments by : Victoria Saramago
Download or read book Fictional Environments written by Victoria Saramago and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-15 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finalist, 2022 ASLE Ecocritical Book Award Fictional Environments: Mimesis, Deforestation, and Development in Latin America investigates how fictional works have become sites for the production of knowledge, imagination, and intervention in Latin American environments. It investigates the dynamic relationship between fictional images and real places, as the lasting representations of forests, rural areas, and deserts in novels clash with collective perceptions of changes like deforestation and urbanization. From the backlands of Brazil to a developing Rio de Janeiro, and from the rainforests of Venezuela and Peru to the Mexican countryside, rapid deforestation took place in Latin America in the second half of the twentieth century. How do fictional works and other cultural objects dramatize, resist, and intervene in these ecological transformations? Through analyses of work by João Guimarães Rosa, Alejo Carpentier, Juan Rulfo, Clarice Lispector, and Mario Vargas Llosa, Victoria Saramago shows how novels have inspired conservationist initiatives and offered counterpoints to developmentalist policies, and how environmental concerns have informed the agendas of novelists as essayists, politicians, and public intellectuals. This book seeks to understand the role of literary representation, or mimesis, in shaping, sustaining, and negotiating environmental imaginaries during the deep, ongoing transformations that have taken place from the 1950s to the present.
