Book Synopsis The Notion of That Which Depends on Us in Plotinus and Its Background by : Erik Eliasson
Download or read book The Notion of That Which Depends on Us in Plotinus and Its Background written by Erik Eliasson and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-06-30 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book analyses Plotinus’ notion of 'that which depends on us', which although central to his ethics, has never been examined in a specific study before. The book traces the sources of this notion in Aristotle and its reception in Stoicism, Middle Platonism and Early Aristotelian Commentators. It then shows how Plotinus’ critical discussion of the inherent problems in previous accounts and his investigation of the notion's application to the Intellect and the One, leads to a highly original interpretation of the notion as central to his account of human agency. The book demonstrates Plotinus’ serious engagement with the central issues of ancient ethics, and his original way of tackling them.

Book Synopsis Sociolinguistic Variation in Seventeenth-Century France by : Wendy Ayres-Bennett
Download or read book Sociolinguistic Variation in Seventeenth-Century France written by Wendy Ayres-Bennett and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-10-14 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a systematic study of sociolinguistic variation in seventeenth-century France. Drawing on a range of case studies, Wendy Ayres-Bennett makes available data about linguistic variation in this period, showing the wealth and variety of language usage at a time that is considered to be the most 'standardising' in the history of French. Variation is analysed in terms of the speaker's 'pre-verbal constitution' - such as gender, age and socio-economic status - or by the medium, register or genre used. As well as examining linguistic variation itself, the book also considers the fundamental methodological issues that are central to all socio-historical linguistic accounts and, more importantly, addresses the question of what the appropriate sources are for linguists taking a socio-historical approach. In each chapter, the case studies present a range of phonological, morphological, syntactic and lexical issues, which pose different methodological questions for sociolinguists and historical linguists alike.

Book Synopsis Jonathan Edwards and the Limits of Enlightenment Philosophy by : Leon Chai
Download or read book Jonathan Edwards and the Limits of Enlightenment Philosophy written by Leon Chai and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1998-04-23 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jonathan Edwards has most often been considered in the context of the Puritanism of New England. In many ways, however, he was closer to the thinkers of the European Enlightenment. In this book. Leon Chai explores that connection, analyzing Edwards' thought in light of a number of the issues that preoccupied such Enlightenment figures as Locke, Descartes, Malebranche, and Leibniz. The book comprises three parts, each of which begins with a detailed analysis of a crucial passage from a classic Enlightenment text, and then turns to a major theological work of Jonathan Edwards' in which the same issue is explored.
