Book Synopsis World-maps for Finding the Direction and Distance to Mecca by : David King
Download or read book World-maps for Finding the Direction and Distance to Mecca written by David King and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-09-06 with total page 670 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two remarkable Iranian world-maps were discovered in 1989 and 1995. Both are made of brass and date from 17th-century Iran. Mecca is at the centre and a highly sophisticated longitude and latitude grid enables the user to determine the direction and distance to Mecca for anywhere in the world between Andalusia and China. Prior to the discovery of these maps it was thought that such cartographic grids were conceived in Europe ca. 1910. This richly-illustrated book presents an overview of the ways in which Muslims over the centuries have determined the sacred direction towards Mecca (qibla) and then describes the two world-maps in detail. The author shows that the geographical data derives from a 15th-century Central Asian source and that the mathematics underlying the grid was developed in 9th-century Baghdad.
Book Synopsis Il tempo è atomico by : Davide Calonico

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Splitting The Second by : Tony Jones
Download or read book Splitting The Second written by Tony Jones and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until the 1950s timekeeping was based on the apparent motion of the Sun that in turn reflected the rotation of the Earth on its axis. But the Earth does not turn smoothly. By the 1940s it was clear that the length of the day fluctuated unpredictably and with it the length of the second. Astronomers wanted to redefine the second in terms of the motions of the Moon and the planets. Physicists wanted to dispense with astronomical time altogether and define the second in terms of the fundamental properties of atoms. The physicists won. The revolution began in June 1955 with the operation of the first successful atomic clock and was complete by October 1967 when the atomic second ousted the astronomical second as the international unit of time. Splitting the Second: The Story of Atomic Time presents the story of this revolution, explaining how atomic clocks work, how more than 200 of them are used to form the world's time, and why we need leap seconds. The book illustrates how accurate time is distributed around the world and what it is used for. It concludes with a look at the future of timekeeping.
