Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Upon Mademoiselle Louise Humanns death in 1836, a distraught Abb Thodore Ratisbonne said of his spiritual mother, Here lays this sweet, strong Christian who, from the depths of her quiet, secluded home, has exercised more influence on the world of her time than will ever be known! Yet in an era when women had few opportunities to excel or contribute to society outside the home, how did this brilliant and pious French mystic help re-Christianize France following the upheaval of the French Revolution? In Louise Humann (17661836)Re-Christianizing Post-Revolutionary France, author Margaret R. OLeary provides a thorough and comprehensive English-language exploration of the history and life of a woman whose extraordinary intellectual prowess, range of thought, and curiosity helped assist a risky underground pastoral ministry during the French Revolution and rebuild the decimated Roman Catholic diocese of Mayence, France. From her early years as a youth receiving the daily light of God to the later development of her radical Christian philosophya philosophy that so confounded Pope Gregory XVI that he said she and her disciples had sinned by an excess of faiththe history of Louise Humann comes alive in detailed historical records, letters, and biographies. Though an anachronism for her timea woman with the mind of a man and the capabilities of a scholar, said one professor who knew her as a youththe power of Louise Humanns apostolate is central for understanding the direction and development of the Roman Catholic Church and the Congrgation de Notre Dame de Sion in the nineteenth century.

This book was released on 1997-04-15 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born and raised in Troyes, France, in 1653 Marguerite Bourgeoys came as a new recruit to de Maisonneuve's tiny and beleaguered settlement of Ville-Marie, founded in 1642 as a Christian missionary society. These early years in New France marked a special period in her life. Firmly committed to the belief that the world would be a better place if people learned to understand one another, she worked to build a better church and a better society, especially for women and children. Marguerite Bourgeoys's life story teaches us about tolerance and compassion, ideals that are no less important now than three centuries ago.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1400 through 1700, the number of reports of demonic possessions among European women was extraordinarily high. During the same period, a new type of mysticism—popular with women—emerged that greatly affected the risk of possession and, as a result, the practice of exorcism. Many feared that in moments of rapture, women, who had surrendered their souls to divine love, were not experiencing the work of angels, but rather the ravages of demons in disguise. So how then, asks Moshe Sluhovsky, were practitioners of exorcism to distinguish demonic from divine possessions? Drawing on unexplored accounts of mystical schools and spiritual techniques, testimonies of the possessed, and exorcism manuals, Believe Not Every Spirit examines how early modern Europeans dealt with this dilemma. The personal experiences of practitioners, Sluhovsky shows, trumped theological knowledge. Worried that this could lead to a rejection of Catholic rituals, the church reshaped the meaning and practices of exorcism, transforming this healing rite into a means of spiritual interrogation. In its efforts to distinguish between good and evil, the church developed important new explanatory frameworks for the relations between body and soul, interiority and exteriority, and the natural and supernatural.

Patricia Simpson goes beyond myth and hagiography to explore Bourgeoys's dream of establishing a radically new religious community of women, recounting her thirty-year struggle to obtain official recognition for the Congrégation of Notre-Dame. Simpson shows that the order faced great resistance from the male Church hierarchy despite the fact that the pioneer society depended on the work of the Congrégation. The order was particularly important in assuming the guardianship of many filles du roi - young women sent to New France under royal auspices to be married to the men of the colony. Simpson also examines the many difficulties the Congrégation faced, which included natural disasters and the dangers involved in trying to reach women and children in settlements throughout New France, as far away as Acadia.

Book excerpt: Given the significance of spiritual direction in modern Christianity, surprisingly little attention has been given to the tradition upon which today s spiritual direction is built. This book delinates the history of spiritual direction for women and by women within the larger context of the history of Christian spirituality and its understanding of human perfectibility. By examining the ways in which women practiced spiritual direction, this study reveals the degree to which women influenced society by using an avenue of influence previously overlooked by scholars.
