Book Synopsis Science Fusion in Contemporary Mexican Literature by : Brian T. Chandler
Download or read book Science Fusion in Contemporary Mexican Literature written by Brian T. Chandler and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2024-03-29 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science Fusion draws on new materialist theory to analyze the relationship between science and literature in contemporary works of fiction, poetry, and theater from Mexico. In this deft new study, Brian Chandler examines how a range of contemporary Mexican writers “fuse” science and literature in their work to rethink what it means to be human in an age of climate change, mass extinctions, interpersonal violence, femicide, and social injustice. The authors under consideration here—including Alberto Blanco, Jorge Volpi, Ignacio Padilla, Sabina Berman, Maricela Guerrero, and Elisa Díaz Castelo—challenge traditional divisions that separate human from nonhuman, subject from object, culture from nature. Using science and literature to engage topics in biopolitics, historiography, metaphysics, ethics, and ecological crisis in the age of the Anthropocene, works of science fusion offer fresh perspectives to address present-day sociocultural and environmental issues.

Book Synopsis Un caniche blanco muerto by : Luis Gutiérrez Maluenda
Download or read book Un caniche blanco muerto written by Luis Gutiérrez Maluenda and published by Literaturas Com Libros. This book was released on with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Secuestro en la Tierra de Gracia written by Miguel A. Santana G and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2012-02 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Criminology and Criminal Policy Movements by : Eugenio Raúl Zaffaroni
Download or read book Criminology and Criminal Policy Movements written by Eugenio Raúl Zaffaroni and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2013 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "These studies recover the historical roots of thinking that are in conflict with, and critical of, present-day tendencies. Criminological theory over the last few decades has oscillated between extremes: on one side there are calls for increasing the state exercise of punitive power as the only means of providing security, in the face of both urban and international rime; while the other side highlights the need for reducing the exercise of punitive power because of the paradoxical effects that it produces. Useful for academics, practitioners, professionals and students, this book will certainly contribute to a wider awareness in crime prevention and criminal justice."--Publisher's website.

Book excerpt: A reporter is the only hope for an innocent man on death row for murder—while the real killer roams free—in this “riveting, provocative” thriller (Publishers Weekly). When burnt-out Miami reporter Matt Cowart receives a letter from a death row inmate pleading his innocence, he is tempted to dismiss it. But as the newspaperman digs into the case of Robert Earl Ferguson, an African American given the death penalty for the brutal slaying of a white girl, he begins to believe that Ferguson is the real victim of hate and prejudice. And if he doesn’t act, the wrong man is going to be executed. In the months that follow, Cowart’s investigative articles not only set Ferguson free, but make Cowart a celebrity and win him a Pulitzer Prize—and set in motion a new chain of unimaginable horror. For there is monster out there, and he is not through with killing. . . . Book Synopsis The Western Codification of Criminal Law by : Aniceto Masferrer
Download or read book The Western Codification of Criminal Law written by Aniceto Masferrer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses an important historiographical gap by assessing the respective contributions of tradition and foreign influences to the 19th century codification of criminal law. More specifically, it focuses on the extent of French influence – among others – in European and American civil law jurisdictions. In this regard, the book seeks to dispel a number of myths concerning the French model’s actual influence on European and Latin American criminal codes. The impact of the Napoleonic criminal code on other jurisdictions was real, but the scope and extent of its influence were significantly less than has sometimes been claimed. The overemphasis on French influence on other civil law jurisdictions is partly due to a fundamental assumption that modern criminal codes constituted a break with the past. The question as to whether they truly broke with the past or were merely a degree of reform touches on a difficult issue, namely, the dichotomy between tradition and foreign influences in the codification of criminal law. Scholarship has unfairly ignored this important subject, an oversight that this book remedies.
Book Synopsis The November Criminals by : Sam Munson
Download or read book The November Criminals written by Sam Munson and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-10-13 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Addison Schact and his best friend Digger become obsessed with investigating the murder of a classmate as they travel through Washington DC’s underworld in this “thoughtful coming-of-age story and engaging teenage noir” (The New York Times). High school senior Addison Schacht is taking the prompt for his college entry essay to the University of Chicago to heart: What are your best and worst qualities? He begins to look back on his life so far and considers what getting into college, selling some pot to his classmates, his relationship with his best friend—not girlfriend—Digger, Virgil’s Aeneid, and his growing obsession with the murder of a classmate, Kevin Broadus, all mean. The more he digs into his own past, the farther he stumbles into the middle of the murder investigation. Filled with classic adolescent reflection and an intriguing mystery, The November Criminals is “one of the funniest, most heartfelt novels in recent memory—a book every bit as worthy of Mark Twain and J.D. Salinger” (The Chicago Tribune).
