Book Synopsis Nurturing the Other by : Vanessa Grotti
Download or read book Nurturing the Other written by Vanessa Grotti and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2022-04-01 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining archival research, oral history and long-term ethnography, this book studies relations between Amerindians and outsiders, such as American missionaries, through a series of contact expeditions that led to the 'pacification' of three native Amazonian groups in Suriname and French Guiana. The author examines and contrasts Amerindian and non-Amerindian views on this process of social transformation through the lens of the body, notions of peacefulness and kinship, as well as native warfare and shamanism. The book addresses questions of change and continuity, and the little explored links between first contacts, capture and native conversion to Christianity in contemporary indigenous Amazonia.

Download or read book Cassava and Chicha written by Linda Mowat and published by Bloomsbury Shire Publications. This book was released on 1989 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The staple diet of most Amazonian Indians is based on a tuberous plant known as manioc. Bitter manioc, the more nutritious form, requires careful processing to remove the poisonous hydrocyanic acid it contains. In order to render it edible, the Indians have developed an elaborate technology involving a range of highly specialised artefacts. By soaking, grating, squeezing, drying and baking, they convert the tubers either to cassava bread or to a coarse toasted flour, farinha. Nutritious manioc beer known as chicha is also produced and consumed in large quantities at feasts and ceremonies. Manioc is not just a food but a way of life in the Amazon, and the daily routine of women in particular is centred around it. About the author Linda Mowat graduated from the Institute of Archaeology in London and proceeded to the University of Leicester, where she obtained the Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies. Her archaeological fieldwork included three seasons in Colombia as a surveyor and while there she was able to visit Indian groups in the tropical forests as well as in the Andes. She subsequently worked as Research Assistant at the Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford.

Book Synopsis Les rituels du dialogue by : Aurore Monod-Becquelin
Download or read book Les rituels du dialogue written by Aurore Monod-Becquelin and published by Societé d'ethnologie. This book was released on 2000 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
