El motivo de su celebración fue propiciar un encuentro de historiadores, arqueólogos y arquitectos que habían intervenido en distintas obras que se habían realizado en los últimos años en el espacio que antiguamente ocupó la Judería de Toledo, aunque también se presentaron algunos ejemplos de otras ciudades. Los resultados de los trabajos permanecían inéditos y se trataba de dar una oportunidad a sus autores para que los pudiesen hacer públicos, y son los que ahora se recogen en esta publicación. El patrimonio material judío, todavía en gran parte por descubrir, sigue estando bastante ignorado, y la arqueología tiene que ser la vía para rescatarlo, sacarlo a luz y divulgarlo, como es el objetivo que tiene esta publicación.

Book excerpt: Con el título de La judería de Toledo en la Edad Media: el arte en su entorno esta tesis doctoral presenta una visión integral de uno de los grupos religiosos fundamentales en la génesis de España y de una ciudad en la que desarrollaron sus proyectos comunales como en ninguna otra de la Península, y muy pocas más en el mundo. El presente trabajo no tiene como objetivo principal catalogar, sino acercar, analizar y clarificar, desde las fuentes historiográficas consultadas hasta nuestra propia aportación, el legado artístico de los judíos de Toledo de la Edad Media, centrándonos en las sinagogas. Y sin perder de vista que el arte es primordial en esta tesis, para entenderlo es fundamental ahondar en aspectos históricos como la relación de los judíos con el resto de confesiones, los condicionantes sociales que les afectaron, la organización de la aljama y la configuración física de la judería toledana. El motivo de la elaboración de la tesis es la creencia de que en un lugar como Toledo, con un patrimonio judío tan excepcional, faltan por establecer nexos entre la sociedad, el espacio físico que ocuparon (la judería) y el arte allí desarrollado, excepcionalmente reflejado en las sinagogas. El tema recibe en muchas ocasiones un tratamiento superficial, en el que se mezclan errores extendidos (la existencia de dos juderías) con caídas en lugares comunes anclados en el imaginario popular (la armonía interreligiosa). Creemos que falta una ordenación sistemática de las sinagogas desaparecidas de Toledo, una clarificación acerca de las que están identificadas y las que no, y por qué ocurre en cada caso. También consideramos conveniente elaborar algunas consideraciones sobre el arte judío, presentando el debate aparentemente irresoluble entre quienes piensan que los judíos no tuvieron un arte específico y los que sí. Aunque la catalogación artística no es un asunto prioritario en la tesis, examinaremos la cuestión. Para conseguir nuestros propósitos añadiremos a la investigación bibliográfica un exhaustivo trabajo de campo, con recorridos por los barrios de la judería y sus alrededores, en busca de los vestigios de los edificios judíos desaparecidos y con especial atención a las sinagogas de Santa María la Blanca y de Samuel ha-Leví, a su relación con el entorno social y a sus características artísticas. Con todo ello pretendemos avanzar un paso más en el camino trazado por algunos de los investigadores que han tratado con rigor este campo de trabajo, como Francisco Cantera Burgos, Pilar León Tello, José Luis Lacave y Jean Passini, entre otros, pero utilizando un método más globalizador, pues creemos imposible entender el arte si lo descontextualizamos, si lo separamos de los restos arqueológicos, de los documentos históricos e incluso de los conocimientos antropológicos que poseemos. Si analizamos cada elemento de manera aislada, si compartimentamos los hechos en estantes cerrados e inconexos, se pierde la visión de conjunto que explique la ligazón entre los espacios físicos y las personas que los pisaron. Nuestro trabajo avanzará de lo general a lo específico. Empezaremos con consideraciones acerca de los judíos hispanos, especialmente los castellanos. Después pasaremos por la aljama y la judería de Toledo, aunque antes dedicaremos un capítulo a las relaciones sociales entre miembros de distintas confesiones. En la judería describiremos la estructura urbana, los barrios y los edificios más importantes. Más adelante, focalizaremos el trabajo en las sinagogas, Santa María la Blanca y el Tránsito, sin olvidarnos de las desaparecidas. Por último, estableceremos algunas conclusiones, algunas más globales y otras más concretas, sobre los judíos toledanos y la ciudad que habitaron.

In vivid and moving detail, Barbara Epstein chronicles the history of a Communist-led resistance movement inside the Minsk ghetto, which, through its links to its Belarussian counterpart outside the ghetto and with help from others, enabled thousands of ghetto Jews to flee to the surrounding forests where they joined partisan units fighting the Germans. Telling a story that stands in stark contrast to what transpired across much of Eastern Europe, where Jews found few reliable allies in the face of the Nazi threat, this book captures the texture of life inside and outside the Minsk ghetto, evoking the harsh conditions, the life-threatening situations, and the friendships that helped many escape almost certain death. Epstein also explores how and why this resistance movement, unlike better known movements at places like Warsaw, Vilna, and Kovno, was able to rely on collaboration with those outside ghetto walls. She finds that an internationalist ethos fostered by two decades of Soviet rule, in addition to other factors, made this extraordinary story possible.

The term stuck. In this sweeping and original account, Mitchell Duneier traces the idea of the ghetto from its beginnings in the sixteenth century and its revival by the Nazis to the present. As Duneier shows, we cannot comprehend the entanglements of race, poverty, and place in America today without recalling the ghettos of Europe, as well as earlier efforts to understand the problems of the American city. Ghetto is the story of the scholars and activists who tried to achieve that understanding. As Duneier shows, their efforts to wrestle with race and poverty cannot be divorced from their individual biographies, which often included direct encounters with prejudice and discrimination in the academy and elsewhere. Using new and forgotten sources, Duneier introduces us to Horace Cayton and St. Clair Drake, graduate students whose conception of the South Side of Chicago established a new paradigm for thinking about Northern racism and poverty in the 1940s. We learn how the psychologist Kenneth Clark subsequently linked Harlem’s slum conditions with the persistence of black powerlessness, and we follow the controversy over Daniel Patrick Moynihan’s report on the black family. We see how the sociologist William Julius Wilson redefined the debate about urban America as middle-class African Americans increasingly escaped the ghetto and the country retreated from racially specific remedies. And we trace the education reformer Geoffrey Canada’s efforts to transform the lives of inner-city children with ambitious interventions, even as other reformers sought to help families escape their neighborhoods altogether. Duneier offers a clear-eyed assessment of the thinkers and doers who have shaped American ideas about urban poverty—and the ghetto. The result is a valuable new estimation of an age-old concept.
