Book Synopsis In Search of La Grande Illusion by : Nicholas Macdonald
Download or read book In Search of La Grande Illusion written by Nicholas Macdonald and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-11-08 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an extended analysis of the film, from different perspectives. The first half is largely a discussion of the cinematic technique, with key sequences analyzed shot by shot. The second half approaches the film from many other angles, including its history, the critical reception, Renoir's life and career, and film theory, e.g., film in relation to music. A case is made that Renoir's career was inconsistent, especially after La Regle du jeu but also during the 1930s. And rather than emphasizing the humanist, anti-war thrust of La Grande Illusion, the film is approached as a work of art that is deeply expressive cinematically.

Book Synopsis La Grande Illusion by : Martin O'Shaughnessy
Download or read book La Grande Illusion written by Martin O'Shaughnessy and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2009-11-30 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Directed by the great Jean Renoir, "La Grande Illusion" (1937) is the finest of all anti-war films and a cinematic masterwork. Other films oppose war by showing its horror. Renoir's film holds the horror at arm's length to give us a clearer view of it. A prisoner-of-war drama, with brilliant performances from leading stars of its period, including Erich von Stroheim and Jean Gabin, the film combines popular appeal with a formal brilliance that allows a complex examination of how classes, nations and genders relate to one another. In this comprehensive and readable companion to the film, Martin O'Shaughnessy underlines its sharp intelligence. He shows how, not content to register the world as it is, the film plays off competing historical possibilities against each other, facing the public with their responsibility to shape the future. Locating the film in the context of Renoir's career, O'Shaughnessy discusses its use of stars, production history, set design and reception. He compares known drafts of the film with a previously undiscovered story outline, casting important new light on its genesis. Stressing how it spoke to its times, he also demonstrates how it speaks to us now.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis La Grande Mademoiselle, 1627-1652 by : Arvède Barine
Download or read book La Grande Mademoiselle, 1627-1652 written by Arvède Barine and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2019-12-12 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a biography of a woman named Anne Marie Louise d'Orléans. She was an individual who stood out during her time, though she was not considered to be among the most outstanding individuals of her era. Her genius was modest, and her character was not particularly exceptional. Although she did not wield significant influence over events, she was a fascinating and daring princess who stood among the prominent figures that Emerson referred to as "representative." Mademoiselle's tumultuous life serves as a remarkable illustration of the profound changes that took place in France during the late 17th century. These changes brought about a natural reaction that fundamentally transformed the nation. Although her individual impact was limited, her story offers a window into a pivotal era in French history.

Book Synopsis Against Marriage by : Anne-Marie-Louise d'Orléans, Duchesse de Montpensier
Download or read book Against Marriage written by Anne-Marie-Louise d'Orléans, Duchesse de Montpensier and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In seventeenth-century France, aristocratic women were valued by their families as commodities to be married off in exchange for money, social advantage, or military alliance. Once married, they became legally subservient to their husbands. The duchesse de Montpensier—a first cousin of Louis XIV—was one of very few exceptions, thanks to the vast wealth she inherited from her mother, who died shortly after Montpensier was born. She was also one of the few politically powerful women in France at the time to have been an accomplished writer. In the daring letters presented in this bilingual edition, Montpensier condemns the alliance system of marriage, proposing instead to found a republic that she would govern, "a corner of the world in which . . . women are their own mistresses," and where marriage and even courtship would be outlawed. Her pastoral utopia would provide medical care and vocational training for the poor, and all the homes would have libraries and studies, so that each woman would have a "room of her own" in which to write books. Joan DeJean's lively introduction and accessible translation of Montpensier's letters—four previously unpublished—allow us unprecedented access to the courageous voice of this extraordinary woman.
