Book Synopsis Approximation Theory by : Ole Christensen
Download or read book Approximation Theory written by Ole Christensen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-03-18 with total page 1080 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This concisely written book gives an elementary introduction to a classical area of mathematics—approximation theory—in a way that naturally leads to the modern field of wavelets. The exposition, driven by ideas rather than technical details and proofs, demonstrates the dynamic nature of mathematics and the influence of classical disciplines on many areas of modern mathematics and applications. Key features and topics: * Description of wavelets in words rather than mathematical symbols * Elementary introduction to approximation using polynomials (Weierstrass’ and Taylor’s theorems) * Introduction to infinite series, with emphasis on approximation-theoretic aspects * Introduction to Fourier analysis * Numerous classical, illustrative examples and constructions * Discussion of the role of wavelets in digital signal processing and data compression, such as the FBI’s use of wavelets to store fingerprints * Minimal prerequisites: elementary calculus * Exercises that may be used in undergraduate and graduate courses on infinite series and Fourier series Approximation Theory: From Taylor Polynomials to Wavelets will be an excellent textbook or self-study reference for students and instructors in pure and applied mathematics, mathematical physics, and engineering. Readers will find motivation and background material pointing toward advanced literature and research topics in pure and applied harmonic analysis and related areas.
Book Synopsis Centenario by : Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (Chile)
Download or read book Centenario written by Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (Chile) and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the occasion of the celebrations of the bicentennial anniversary of Chile, and the centennial anniversary of the National Museum of Fine Arts, constructed in 1910 as part of the festivities of the Independence centennial, the MNBA planned a series of exhibitions under the title of Centenario. This beautifully edited recompilation volume comprises the history of the museum MNBA with a descriptive and illustrated catalogue of the 250 most important pieces of its patrimonial collection exhibited in the 7 modules that comprised the program Centenario. Milan Ivelic, director of the MNBA explains: "The objective of this publication is to articulate and organize the symbolic imaginaries that are part of the holdings of the Collection of Chilean Art of the MNBA. What this publication is proposing is the organization in a transversal way of the art pieces selected, without following a linear chronology, thus constructing, in a certain way, a new museographic script. The art pieces have been divided into 7 modules based on a broad criteria that respond to their approximation in languages, topic similarities and shared strategic processes for their elaboration, conceptualizing theory and analysis of the artistic practices, without omitting their own historical context"--P.20. The contents of the catalogue follow the 7 main topic modules of the exhibitions. Major referential work illustrated with full-page color plates.

Book Synopsis Immaculate Conceptions by : Rosilie Hernández
Download or read book Immaculate Conceptions written by Rosilie Hernández and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2019-08-22 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Immaculate Conceptions examines devotional writings, religious and literary texts, and visual art that feature the mystery of the immaculacy of the Virgin Mary in the culture of early modern Spain. The author’s analysis is motivated by the complexity and multivalent capacity of the doctrine and its icon at a time when the debates around Mary’s conception imbued all levels of religious and social life. She considers the many interests – political, doctrinal, artistic, and gender-driven – that intersect and compete in the exegesis and textual and visual representations of the Immaculate Conception. She argues that the Immaculate Conception of Mary proved to be a fertile conceptual and ideological field wherein the identities of the Spanish state, local communities, and individuals were negotiated, variously defined, and contested. The study’s broader aim is to delineate a speculative category, the religious imagination, defined as a spiritual, intellectual, or artistic pursuit in which the individual is committed to sacred truth yet articulates this truth through contingent, partial, and contextually determined theological propositions. The representational status of the image and its relationship to theories of physical sight and spiritual vision are central to the author’s formulation of this category.
