Book Synopsis Interactions between Orality and Writing in Early Modern Italian Culture by : Luca Degl’Innocenti
Download or read book Interactions between Orality and Writing in Early Modern Italian Culture written by Luca Degl’Innocenti and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-02 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigating the interrelationships between orality and writing in elite and popular textual culture in early modern Italy, this volume shows how the spoken or sung word on the one hand, and manuscript or print on the other hand, could have interdependent or complementary roles to play in the creation and circulation of texts. The first part of the book centres on performances, ranging from realizations of written texts to improvisations or semi-improvisations that might draw on written sources and might later be committed to paper. Case studies examine the poems sung in the piazza that narrated contemporary warfare, commedia dell'arte scenarios, and the performative representation of the diverse spoken languages of Italy. The second group of essays studies the influence of speech on the written word and reveals that, as fourteenth-century Tuscan became accepted as a literary standard, contemporary non-standard spoken languages were seen to possess an immediacy that made them an effective resource within certain kinds of written communication. The third part considers the roles of orality in the worlds of the learned and of learning. The book as a whole demonstrates that the borderline between orality and writing was highly permeable and that the culture of the period, with its continued reliance on orality alongside writing, was often hybrid in nature.

Book Synopsis Venice: Four Seasons of Home Cooking by : Russell Norman
Download or read book Venice: Four Seasons of Home Cooking written by Russell Norman and published by Rizzoli Publications. This book was released on 2020-03-31 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dazzling tribute to Italy's greatest "hidden" regional cuisine by the author of the bestselling and groundbreaking cookbook Polpo Returning to the city of his gastronomic inspiration, Norman Russell immerses himself in the authentic recipes and culinary traditions of Venice and the Veneto in one hundred recipes showcasing the simple but exquisite flavors of La Serenissima. He documents one magical year learning and fine-tuning the specialties and everyday comfort foods of la cucina veneziana in a rustic kitchen in a neighborhood far from the tourist crowds -- where washing hangs across the narrow streets and some houses still rely on a communal well for water. Russell lovingly reproduces true Venetian recipes with authentic ingredients very different from the globalized tourist fare in the city's restaurants. The book is structured by season highlighting the ever-changing produce available in Venice's buzzing market stalls throughout the year. Included are Venetian favorites such as asparagus with Parmesan and anchovy butter, butternut risotto, arancini, rabbit cacciatore, warm duck salad with walnuts and beets, scallops with lemon and peppermint, and warm octopus salad. Russell also affords a rare and intimate glimpse into Venice: its hidden architectural gems, secret places, embedded history, the color and energy of daily life and the characters that make this city so enchanting
Book Synopsis Natural Law and the Law of Nations in Eighteenth- and Nineteenth-Century Italy by :
Download or read book Natural Law and the Law of Nations in Eighteenth- and Nineteenth-Century Italy written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-11-07 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The open access publication of this book was financially supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation. This volume sheds new light on modern theories of natural law through the lens of the fragmented political contexts of Italy in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and the dramatic changes of the times. From the age of reforms, through revolution and the ‘Risorgimento’, the unification movement which ended with the creation of the unified Kingdom of Italy in 1861, we see a move from natural law and the law of nations to international law, whose teaching was introduced in Italian universities of the newly created Kingdom. The essays collected here show that natural law was not only the subject of a highly codified academic teaching, but also provided a broader conceptual and philosophical frame underlying the ‘science of man’. Natural law is also a language wherein reform programmes of education and of politics have taken form, affecting a variety of discourses and literary genres.
