Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Demi is a beautiful, young , intelligent Yaqui Indian girl, living the carefree life of a teenager. She is blessed with wonderful parents, a wise and loving grandmother; and a supportive extended family. All of a sudden it seems, her carefree world begins to fall apart; first with her beloved’s cousin ingression into the community’s street gangs, then his violent death. His death signals the emergence of the family’s ghosts and past; revealing terrible acts of violence, revenge and horror – while at the same time demonstrating the valor, strength and unity of a family, a town, and a people. A brief history of the Town of Guadalupe, Arizona is included in this story as a necessary backdrop to Demi’s story. Guadalupe’s history, like La Flor de Capomo, is a history of courage, hope, faith, strength and hard-won unity, without which our Town would be history, and our people scattered to the winds.

Book excerpt: Perfect for fans of Mick Herron and John Le Carré "The most important thing that's happened in Mexican literature in the last thirty years" Gaby Wood, Sunday Telegraph. It's Christmas in Culiacán and Detective Edgar "Lefty" Mendieta can't believe his luck. An old flame has returned with a teenage son he knew nothing about. Happiness seems to finally beckon for our careworn hero. The only snag is that Jason Mendieta wants to follow in his father's footsteps-even as Mexico's drug war descends a slippery slope toward chaos. While Lefty pursues a lunatic who has taken to bumping off dentists with a heavy-calibre pistol, a secret agent infiltrates a meeting of the drug lords and hears Pacific Cartel boss Samantha Valdés implore her underlings to stay out of the war. But an audacious murder provokes Samantha to change her mind and launch a wave of grisly killings across the country. Samantha then persuades Lefty to help her find the killer that pushed her over the edge. The truth he discovers will underline an old adage: revenge is a dish best served cold. No quiet family Christmas for our detective.

Book Synopsis Transnational Encounters by : Alejandro L. Madrid
Download or read book Transnational Encounters written by Alejandro L. Madrid and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-29 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the study of a large variety of musical practices from the U.S.-Mexico border, Transnational Encounters seeks to provide a new perspective on the complex character of this geographic area. By focusing not only on norteña, banda or conjunto musics (the most stereotypical musical traditions among Hispanics in the area) but also engaging a number of musical practices that have often been neglected in the study of this border's history and culture (indigenous musics, African American musical traditions, pop musics), the authors provide a glance into the diversity of ethnic groups that have encountered each other throughout the area's history. Against common misconceptions about the U.S.-Mexico border as a predominant Mexican area, this book argues that it is diversity and not homogeneity which characterizes it. From a wide variety of disciplinary and multidisciplinary enunciations, these essays explore the transnational connections that inform these musical cultures while keeping an eye on their powerful local significance, in an attempt to redefine notions like "border," "nation," "migration," "diaspora," etc. Looking at music and its performative power through the looking glass of cultural criticism allows this book to contribute to larger intellectual concerns and help redefine the field of U.S.-Mexico border studies beyond the North/South and American/Mexican dichotomies. Furthermore, the essays in this book problematize some of the widespread misconceptions about U.S.-Mexico border history and culture in the current debate about immigration.

Book Synopsis Elsevier's Dictionary of Plant Names of North America Including Mexico by :
Download or read book Elsevier's Dictionary of Plant Names of North America Including Mexico written by and published by . This book was released on 2003-07 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The border between the United States of America and Mexico is the busiest in the world. This area is also the meeting place of the two great cultures of the Western Hemisphere, Spanish-speaking Latin America and English-speaking North America. Recent demographic migrations coupled with increasing globalization have necessitated closer cooperation and communication between these groups. The area of communication of this dictionary centers around the vernacular or common names of plants. Many recent immigrants from Mexico and further south have gained employment in areas of agriculture, landscaping, and commercial plant nurseries. The new residents also bring with them a rich history of herbal medicines that are becoming increasingly popular in the United States. Both groups share interests in each other's cuisines with respect to food plants and spices. This dictionary contains the Latin, English, and Spanish names for over 7,000 species of the most important plants found mainly in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Included are native and naturalized plants as well as plants of economic value. The main section of the book is organized alphabetically by the scientific Latin genus and species of each plant. The book is also fully indexed by common names primarily in American-English and Mexican-Spanish.
