Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her Introduction, Tymieniecka states the core theme of the present book sharply: Is culture an excess of nature's prodigious expansiveness - an excess which might turn out to be dangerous for nature itself if it goes too far - or is culture a 'natural', congenial prolongation of nature-life? If the latter, then culture is assimilated into nature and thus would lose its claim to autonomy: its criteria would be superseded by those of nature alone. Of course, nature and culture may both still be seen as being absorbed by the inner powers of specifically human inwardness, on which view, human being, caught in its own transcendence, becomes separated radically in kind from the rest of existence and may not touch even the shadow of reality except through its own prism. Excess, therefore, or prolongation? And on what terms? The relationship between culture and nature in its technical phase demands a new elucidation. Here this is pursued by excavating the root significance of the 'multiple rationalities' of life. In contrast to Husserl, who differentiated living types according to their degree of participation in the world, the phenomenology of life disentangles living types from within the ontopoietic web of life itself. The human creative act reveals itself as the Great Divide of the Logos of Life - a divide that does not separate but harmonizes, thus dispelling both naturalistic and spiritualistic reductionism.

Book excerpt: This catalog and the exhibit it represents (seen in Rotterdam, Lyons, and Paris during 1997) focuses on Kees van Dongen's early work on paper, filling lacunae left by exhibits of later work mounted during the past nine years. The artist (1877-1968) was a Dutch painter who migrated to Paris and is known for his colorful Fauvist canvases, his portraits of international figures and the Parisian beau monde, and for his female nudes. Curator Hopmans' interpretive commentary on the artist's development from draughtsman to painter accompanies the visual catalogue featuring full-page and smaller reproductions. 9.5x12.5"Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book excerpt: Nature, the cosmos, and humanity were all subjects which Joan Miro (1893-1983) pursued in a tremendous array of styles and in nearly every known medium. This beautiful new book communicates the scope and quality of his art, including the most important works throughout his life. Tracing Miro's entire career, this pictorial journey begins in the 1920s with his introduction to surrealism, cubism, and dadaism, and with the flowering of his friendships with Picasso, Braque and other influential artists and poets. It moves on to his creation of a universal iconographic language, a style which reached maturity in the 1940s, and which forever distinguished Miro from his contemporaries. This book includes nearly one hundred of his greatest works, displaying the subconscious expression of this lyrical painter, whose brilliant use of color, line, and shape resulted in unique and dazzling compositions. Fascinating photographs depict the artist at various stages of his life while perceptive essays about his work round out this exciting vision of the world as seen through Miro's eyes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alongside Picasso and Warhol, Joan Miró (1893-1983) is one of the twentieth century's most influential artists. Miró created a pictorial world of intense imaginative power, in which visionary and cosmic elements are inextricably intertwined with the earthly and mundane. The research for this six-volume catalogue raisonné of Miró's paintings, spanning the years 1908 to 1981, was begun in 1957. The artist himself and later the Miró Estate were largely involved in its preparation--Jacques Dupin, Ariane Lelong-Mainaud and Joan Punyet Miró. The catalogue includes all the artist's oils, acrylics and works in various media--on canvas, cardboard, wood, masonite, copper and other hard supports. In the six volumes--all published only in English--all paintings are reproduced in color, whenever possible, accompanied by their title, date, technique and dimensions, with indication of signature and inscriptions on the back, as well as their collection, provenance, important exhibitions and major publications in which they are reproduced.
