Book Synopsis La Fleur de Lis by : Morgan McCall Molthrop
Download or read book La Fleur de Lis written by Morgan McCall Molthrop and published by . This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With colorful photos and lively text, this book shows how ubiquitous the fleur is in the Gulf region. It reveals the Egyptian and Mesoamerican ancestry of the symbol and traces the history of its use on the Gulf Coast as a symbol of post-Katrina resilience. It also addresses the controversy surrounding its use as a brand for enslaved Africans in French and Spanish "Bourbon" Louisiana. Is the fact that the fleur actually emerges from Africa a mitigating factor? You will have to decide. But with the current controversies surrounding the rebel flag, NOLA's Confederate statues and the fleur de lis, the timing of this book could not be better. It's a gorgeous little book with a dark side. (Kind of like New Orleans is a gorgeous city with a dark side, no?) The somewhat controversial aspects of the book lend an edgy aspect that provides for a sophisticated small gift title.

Book Synopsis The Medieval Crossbow by : ELLIS-GORMAN STUART
Download or read book The Medieval Crossbow written by ELLIS-GORMAN STUART and published by Pen & Sword Military. This book was released on 2022-05-30 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The crossbow is an iconic weapon of the Middle Ages and, alongside the longbow, one of the most effective ranged weapons of the pre-gunpowder era. Unfortunately, despite its general fame it has been decades since an in-depth history of the medieval crossbow has been published, which is why Stuart Ellis-Gorman's detailed, accessible, and highly illustrated study is so valuable. The Medieval Crossbow approaches the history of the crossbow from two directions. The first is a technical study of the design and construction of the medieval crossbow, the many different kinds of crossbows used during the Middle Ages, and finally a consideration of the relationship between crossbows and art. The second half of the book explores the history of the crossbow, from its origins in ancient China to its decline in sixteenth-century Europe. Along the way it explores the challenges in deciphering the crossbow's early medieval history as well as its prominence in warfare and sport shooting in the High and Later Middle Ages. This fascinating book brings together the work of a wide range of accomplished crossbow scholars and incorporates the author's own original research to create an account of the medieval crossbow that will appeal to anyone looking to gain an insight into one of the most important weapons of the Middle Ages.
Book Synopsis New Orleans in Golden Age Postcards by : Matthew Griffis
Download or read book New Orleans in Golden Age Postcards written by Matthew Griffis and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2020-09-22 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Orleans in Golden Age Postcards showcases over three hundred vintage postcard images of the city, printed in glorious color. From popular tourist attractions, restaurants, and grand hotels to local businesses, banks, churches, neighborhoods, civic buildings, and parks, the book not only celebrates these cards’ visual beauty but also considers their historic value. After providing an overview of the history of postcards in New Orleans, Matthew Griffis expertly arranges and describes the postcards by subject or theme. Focusing on the period from 1900 to 1920, the book is the first to offer information about the cards’ many publishers. More than a century ago, people sent postcards like we make phone calls today. Many also collected postcards, even trading them in groups or clubs. Adorned with colorized views of urban and rural landscapes, postcards offered people a chance to own images of places they lived, visited, or merely dreamed of visiting. Today, these relics remain one of the richest visual records of the last century as they offer a glimpse at the ways a city represented itself. They now appear regularly in art exhibits, blogs, and research collections. Many of the cards in this book have not been widely seen in well over a century, and many of the places and traditions they depict have long since vanished.

Book Synopsis Seeking the Other Side by : Jane Olmsted
Download or read book Seeking the Other Side written by Jane Olmsted and published by Louisville Review Corporation and Fleur-de-Lis Press. This book was released on 2015-05-15 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection is called "seeking the other side" as a way to reinvigorate what acquisitiveness and obsessive work habits deaden-the capacity to connect in some way with the Other, even when that turns out to be a part of ourselves. These poems attempt to reach through or across the boundaries that keep us ignorant of truths beyond the readily apparent. The "other side" is not just as what's across the line between life and death, between self and object of grief, but as what's across any other real or illusory line that stifles access to the fullness of life.

Book Synopsis The Fleurs de Lis of the Kings of France, 1285-1488 by : William M. Hinkle
Download or read book The Fleurs de Lis of the Kings of France, 1285-1488 written by William M. Hinkle and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring 56 illustrations, this definitive work on the arms of France delves into the mythology of kingship, probes the mystique of kings. Hinkle's comprehensive, chronological study of the origin, evolution, and function of the fleurs de lis covers the 200-year period beginning near the end of the 13th century with the emergence of France as a European power and ending at the close of hostilities between England and France in the late 15th century. His interdisciplinary study focuses on literature, history, and art history but also includes numismatics and sigillography. Hinkle first investigates the precursor to the fleurs de lis, the stylized lily of the early Capetian rulers. The initial literary reference to the later heraldic lily appeared shortly after 1285, with subsequent years witnessing further poetic glorification of the symbol. By 1316, the poetry of the period and of Geoffroy de Paris began to celebrate the three lilies on the royal escutcheon as a symbol of the Trinity. Concurrently, the death of a Capetian monarch without a male heir led to both the proclamation that no woman could succeed to the French throne and the appointment of the dead king's brother as Philip V. A second succession problem occurred in 1328 when the nearest male relative was Edward III of England. The French estates selected Philip VI, founder of the Valois line. To resolve the problem of succession, the pope proposed a crusade led by both Edward III and Philip VI. Preparations for this crusade led to Philippe de Vitri's poem of the 1330s: Le chapel des trois fleurs de lis. Although the crusade was later canceled, the poem signaled the beginnings of French nationalism symbolized by the three heraldic flowers. Two later poems from the 1330s celebrate the divine creation of the fleurs de lis. Hinkle tells a complex story lucidly. Examining the significance of the visual image of the fleurs de lis, he shows how the lilies evolved into emblems of God's favor, directed not only to the kings of France. The English also eagerly adopted the symbolism of the fleurs de lis for their young king, Henry VI, and that, too, is a fascinating part of the story.
