Su objetivo fue el cómo encontrar la felicidad en un mundo sumamente caótico y exigente, tal como de hecho lo es hoy en día, de ahí que en la actualidad sea tan útil y valiosa como lo fue en su época. Para alcanzar este objetivo, los filósofos de ésta época propusieron tanto una visión filosófica coherente y completa para entender la realidad, como también un determinado estilo de vida, que fuera útil para alcanzar la felicidad y superar las dificultades de la existencia en un mundo cada vez más complejo. Se explican en este libro, de forma clara, completa y aterrizada, tanto los fundamentos teóricos y prácticos de las corrientes de ésta época, como la vida y las anécdotas más relevantes de sus miembros. Dichas corrientes son: EL CINISMO, cuyo exponente más importante es Diógenes de Sinope, y que consideraban que la felicidad se encuentra en vivir una vida de sencillez y fortaleza. EL ESTOICISMO, representado entre otros por Epicteto, Séneca y Marco Aurelio (quien de hecho fue Emperador de Roma), quienes veían en la fortaleza, el autocontrol y la colaboración con el cosmos la clave de la felicidad. EL EPICUREÍSMO, cuyo fundador Epicuro de Samos proponía que el mundo esta conformado por átomos, y que la felicidad viene del placer elegido de manera inteligente (hedonismo), incluyendo la amistad, el conocimiento y la creación y contemplación artística. EL ESCEPTICISMO, fundado por Pirrón de Elis, que considera que el conocimiento metafísico es imposible, y que postula la necesidad de un conocimiento basado en la experiencia personal para encontrar la forma más satisfactoria para cada uno de vivir. Y EL NEOPLATONISMO, que postula que la felicidad viene de tener un contacto directo y personal con el Dios a través de una experiencia mística. Se analiza además, de una forma didáctica y comprensible, el contexto histórico de donde surgieron, época denominada helenismo, configurada por las conquistas de Alejandro Magno y del Imperio Romano, analizando también cuál es la vigencia que tienen hoy en día sus propuestas.
