Book Synopsis Théâtre Des Variétés by : Joseph Long
Download or read book Théâtre Des Variétés written by Joseph Long and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Théâtre des Variétés, built in 1807 on the boulevard Montmartre, is the oldest theatre building still to be used in Paris. By tracing the vicissitudes of the Variétés in its early years we hope to fill in some of the colorful picture of its historical context, showing, through this representative example, how the alternative theatre was shaped and developed in its formative years until finally it settled along the northern boulevards and drew from this location the title -- discredited today -- of théâtre de boulevard. The material is divided between the continuous narrative of the introduction and the more detailed or technical commentary accompanying the illustrations. - Foreword.

Book Synopsis 'Eugénie et Mathilde, ou Mémoires de la famille du Comte de Revel', by Madame de Souza by : Kirsty Carpenter
Download or read book 'Eugénie et Mathilde, ou Mémoires de la famille du Comte de Revel', by Madame de Souza written by Kirsty Carpenter and published by MHRA. This book was released on 2014-06-25 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Madame de Souza was an eighteenth-century political journalist of undisputed talent. She did not fear to accuse religion of falsely justifying intolerant political attitudes, or using indoctrination for little human gain. She dared to show that this achieved immediate social dislocation, and, in the long-term, grief and financial dysfunction. Eugénie et Mathilde, which documents revolutionary decisions made in Emigration, and the irrevocable futility of losing family, home, rank and property in war, fully reflects her approach. It is a complex and compelling story of one family and its experience of 1789-1797 - the years of exile during the French Revolution. Heart-rending decisions, forced departures, capital punishment and death of loved-ones make the novel as topical now as it was on the eve of Napoleon’s Russian Campaign. Souza’s plea for tolerance, fraternity and compromise on the part of the State and its enemies has a relevance that stretches out to the 21st Century; her message to include women in politics and not to make them suffer the unnecessary death of fathers, husbands, children and friends is even more current. This edition lifts the veil on a literary form of anti-sentimental romance, or the art of making historically accurate accounts masquerade as fiction. That, more than anything else, was Madame de Souza’s forte.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gnosis: Journal of Gnostic Studies is a peer-reviewed publication devoted to the study of Gnostic religious currents from the ancient world to the modern, where ‘Gnostic’ is broadly conceived as a reference to special direct knowledge of the divine, which either transcends or transgresses conventional religious knowledge. It aims to publish academic papers on: the emergence of the Gnostic, in its many different historical and local cultural contexts; the Gnostic strands that persisted in the middle ages; and modern interpretations of Gnosticism – with the goal of establishing cross-cultural and trans-historical conversations, together with more localized historical analyses. The corpus of Gnostic materials includes (but is not restricted to) testimonies from outsiders as well as insider literature such as the Nag Hammadi collection, the Hermetica, Neoplatonic texts, the Pistis Sophia, the books of Jeu, the Berlin and Tchacos codices, Manichaean documents, Mandaean scriptures, and contemporary Gnostic fiction/film and ‘revealed’ literature. The journal will publish the best of traditional historical and comparative scholarship while also featuring newer approaches that have received less attention in the established literature, such as cognitive science, cognitive linguistics, social memory, psychology, ethnography, sociology, and literary theory.
