Rousseau propone una revolución moral presidida por esquemas religiosos, aunque esta religión tiene que adaptarse a los nuevos tiempos: la metafísica debe ceder ante lo terrenal, o la moral primar frente a lo teológico. La religión civil, como religión patriótica, es expresión de su deísmo en el ámbito político.

No obstante, esto no ha significado el fin del discurso ético: de su renacer han sido responsables Rawls, con su «teoría de la justicia», Apel y Habermas, con su ética comunicativa post-ilustrada, sin dejar de mencionar a Maclntyre y su reivindiación del aristotelismo y nostalgia comunitarista, claro síntoma de la insatisfacción y perplejidades que acompañan a las filosofías morales contemporáneas.
