Une étude comparée de la dimension islamique dans la politique étrangère du Maroc, entre les deux chefs de l'État (Hassan II et Mohamed V), est nécessaire pour mettre en perspective les innovations apportées par Mohamed VI à une politique qu'on attribue souvent à Hassan II.

Cette interaction trouve parfaitement son sens dans l'existence d'une compétition politique permanente entre deux acteurs historiques, le roi Hassan II et les partis politiques du mouvement national, autour d'un enjeu politique majeur, à savoir la définition de la forme de l'état. Ces questions soulèvent avec acuité ce que nous appelons le cheminement complexe de la production de la politique étrangère. Les meilleurs moments pour vérifier les caractéristiques de ce cheminement sont les crises, car c'est à ce moment qu'apparaissent les vrais enjeux et les intentions des acteurs nationaux, c'est à cet instant aussi que l'on peut mesurer la liberté d'action du principal décideur, le Roi, et d'autres prétendants à l'élaboration de la décision, les partis politiques, le patronat et les O.N.G. nationales. Les nombreuses crises auxquelles sont confrontées les hautes sphères de l'état marocain depuis l'indépendance montrent souvent un chef d'Etat pris en tenaille ; d'un côté, il tient à maîtriser la stabilité du système politique face aux partis du mouvement national, et de l'autre, il fait en sorte que la position diplomatique adoptée soit au diapason de ses engagements internationaux notamment vis-à-vis de ses amis qui lui garantissent, en contrepartie, l'équilibre régional au Maghreb" -- from book cover.

During this time, the archipelago attracted international attention as the most-populated Muslim-majority country in the world. As religious issues and actors have been increasingly taken into account in the analysis and conduct of international relations, particularly since the 9/11 events, Indonesia’s leaders have adapted to this new context. Taking a socio-historical perspective, this book examines the growing role of transnational Islamic Non-State Actors (NSAs) in post-authoritarian Indonesia and how it has affected the making of Indonesia’s foreign policy since the country embarked on the democratization process in 1998. It returns to the origins of the relationship between Islamic organisations and the Indonesian institutions in order to explain the current interactions between transnational Islamic actors and the country’s official foreign policies. The book considers for the first time the interactions between the "parallel diplomacy" undertaken by Indonesia’s Islamic NSAs and the country’s official foreign policy narrative and actions. It explains the adaptation of the state’s responses, and investigates the outcomes of those responses on the country’s international identity. Combining field-collected data and a theoretical reflexion, it offers a distanced analysis which deepens theoretical approaches on transnational religious actors. Book excerpt: The surprising similarities in the rise and fall of the Sunni Islamic and Roman Catholic empires in the face of the modern state Coping with Defeat presents a historical panorama of the Islamic and Catholic political-religious empires and exposes striking parallels in their relationship with the modern state. Drawing on interviews, site visits, and archival research in Turkey, North Africa, and Western Europe, Jonathan Laurence demonstrates how, over hundreds of years, both Sunni and Catholic authorities experienced three major shocks and displacements—religious reformation, the rise of the nation-state, and mass migration. As a result, Catholic institutions eventually accepted the state’s political jurisdiction and embraced transnational spiritual leadership as their central mission. Laurence reveals an analogous process unfolding across the Sunni Muslim world in the twenty-first century. Identifying institutional patterns before and after political collapse, Laurence shows how centralized religious communities relinquish power at different rates and times. Whereas early Christianity and Islam were characterized by missionary expansion, religious institutions forged in the modern era are primarily defensive in nature. They respond to the simple but overlooked imperative to adapt to political defeat while fighting off ideological challenges to their spiritual authority. Among Laurence’s findings is that the disestablishment of Islam—the doing away with Islamic affairs ministries in the Muslim world—would harm, not help with, reconciliation to the rule of law. Examining upheavals in geography, politics, and demography, Coping with Defeat considers how centralized religions make peace with the loss of prestige.
