Book excerpt: A Delusional Technology Syndrome (Chapter 1) has facilitated the manifestation of Digital Data Disorders (Chapter 2) that are impacting our lives in very negative ways and thus driving the need for an Information Integrity Imperative for the twenty first century (Chapter 3). There is a new way forward and a new day to prosper that I will cover in the Road to Recovery (Chapter 4). I hope you will gain insight from reading this book and will share your insights with others. I am also confident we the people will establish the appropriate levels of commitment to ensure the information stored and manipulated in thousands of technology systems, that have a high degree of control over the quality of our lives, represent reality in a truthful and fair way. We have not lost our trust in America, nor our form of government, nor our way of life. Maybe we have lost trust in most corporations and politicians who avoid transparency. However, we have not lost trust in the American people, who created the most innovative nation on the face of the planet. I am certain the American people will meet the challenge of Data Integrity and make our nation and the world an even better place for all the digital citizens living in the digital age.

Book excerpt: How to plan your future strategy for efficient, cost-saving data management Businesses have historically treated data protection as an afterthought, as simply making an occasional copy of data that could be used in the future. Today, this attitude is changing rapidly. The ever-increasing amount of data, along with the emphasis on continuous availability, necessitates changes in the approach to data integrity, which results in management and protection becoming much more closely aligned. Digital Data Integrity throws light on the data integrity landscape of the future. It provides the reader with a brief overview of the historical methods and subsequent evolution of data protection. The text shows how the whole subject of data integrity is changing and describes and positions many of the new, enhanced, more intelligent protection technologies and methods. Digital Data Integrity: Takes a unique, forward look at data protection and management, highlighting the paradigm shift from simple backup and recovery to total data management. Details recent developments in compliance regulations in an accessible manner. Covers enhanced protection technologies such as advanced intelligent synthetic backups, data reduction methods, and data growth – online protection using continuous data protection. Explains data life cycle management and data storage, using management, quality of service products and tools to achieve better data management, intelligent allocation of storage, and compliance with regulations. Contains information on quality control, looking at SLA (Service Level Agreements), protection by business unit and billing/charge back. Unique insight into hot topics such as next generation bare metal recovery and true system provisioning. This invaluable text will provide system administrators, and database administrators, as well as senior IT managers and decision makers with a thorough understanding of data management and protection. Book excerpt: As digital technologies are expanding the power and reach of research, they are also raising complex issues. These include complications in ensuring the validity of research data; standards that do not keep pace with the high rate of innovation; restrictions on data sharing that reduce the ability of researchers to verify results and build on previous research; and huge increases in the amount of data being generated, creating severe challenges in preserving that data for long-term use. Ensuring the Integrity, Accessibility, and Stewardship of Research Data in the Digital Age examines the consequences of the changes affecting research data with respect to three issues - integrity, accessibility, and stewardship-and finds a need for a new approach to the design and the management of research projects. The report recommends that all researchers receive appropriate training in the management of research data, and calls on researchers to make all research data, methods, and other information underlying results publicly accessible in a timely manner. The book also sees the stewardship of research data as a critical long-term task for the research enterprise and its stakeholders. Individual researchers, research institutions, research sponsors, professional societies, and journals involved in scientific, engineering, and medical research will find this book an essential guide to the principles affecting research data in the digital age.

Has the Data integrity work been fairly and/or equitably divided and delegated among team members who are qualified and capable to perform the work? Has everyone contributed? If substitutes have been appointed, have they been briefed on the Data integrity goals and received regular communications as to the progress to date? What other organizational variables, such as reward systems or communication systems, affect the performance of this Data integrity process? What will drive Data integrity change? Defining, designing, creating, and implementing a process to solve a challenge or meet an objective is the most valuable role... In EVERY group, company, organization and department. Unless you are talking a one-time, single-use project, there should be a process. Someone capable of asking the right questions and step back and say, 'What are we really trying to accomplish here? And is there a different way to look at it?' This Self-Assessment empowers people to do just that - whether their title is entrepreneur, manager, consultant, (Vice-)President, CxO etc... - they are the people who rule the future. They are the person who asks the right questions to make Data integrity investments work better. This Data integrity All-Inclusive Self-Assessment enables You to be that person. All the tools you need to an in-depth Data integrity Self-Assessment. Featuring 695 new and updated case-based questions, organized into seven core areas of process design, this Self-Assessment will help you identify areas in which Data integrity improvements can be made. In using the questions you will be better able to: - diagnose Data integrity projects, initiatives, organizations, businesses and processes using accepted diagnostic standards and practices - implement evidence-based best practice strategies aligned with overall goals - integrate recent advances in Data integrity and process design strategies into practice according to best practice guidelines Using a Self-Assessment tool known as the Data integrity Scorecard, you will develop a clear picture of which Data integrity areas need attention. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the greatly increased use of electronic media for processing and storing data, data security became an important practical issue. This is especially true for the extensively shared and distributed systems which are more and more being accepted in commercial operations. Essen tially, the problem is that of protecting data, including all the impli cations which this has to the end user as well as the systems or database designer. However, usually the term data security refers to protection by technical, i.e., computer science specific, means; if one wants to in clude issues such as physical security, how to select the group of people who should have authority to perform certain operations, etc., the term computer security is more appropriate. The object of this book is to provide technical solutions to (facets of) the problem of achieving data security. The reader who hopes to find clever recipes which allow circumventing protection mechanisms will, however, be sadly disappointed. In fact, we deliberately kept the presentation of the material at a fairly general level. While the short term benefit of such an approach may be somewhat smaller, we feel that without a thorough understanding of the fundamental issues and problems in data security there will never be secure systems. True, peo ple probably always considered certain security aspects when designing a system. However, an integrated approach is absolutely imperative.
