Elles ont dû vivre l'effondrement des lois fondamentales qui ordonnent les rapports entre les hommes et garantissent les bases du langage. Cet effondrement a entraîné une rupture de la transmission et l'impossibilité d'inscrire ce qui se trouve dès lors condamné à l'errance. On peut ainsi parler de catastrophe du lien social ou de catastrophe du symbolique. De telles situations mettent à mal le sujet, comme si une part de lui restait emprisonnée dans un impossible à symboliser, à relier, à transmettre et à oublier. Cette part " hors sujet " passe intacte par le corps, elle traverse la personne et (ou) ses descendants sous forme de symptômes physiques (maladies), sensoriels (hallucinations), dans des passages à l'acte (répétition du meurtre ou de son équivalent), ou sous forme de souffrance morale intense en rapport avec le vide (dépressions mélancoliques). C'est la danse contemporaine, associée à son chemin en psychanalyse, qui a donné à l'auteure ses premiers repères pour aborder un travail où les outils classiques de la psychanalyse (neutralité bienveillante, analyse des processus de langage et des rêves visant à lever le refoulement) ne fonctionnaient pas. Issues du chemin parcouru avec des enfants ayant subi des atteintes précoces du corps (maladies graves ayant entraîné des hospitalisations longues et nombreuses, maltraitances ayant entraîné des placements multiples), les situations cliniques présentées montrent comment l'émergence d'histoires (contes ou théories) permet de passer d'un texte mort, retranché par le traumatisme, à une langue vivante indispensable au rétablissement du lien social. L'ouvrage fait également ressortir l'inadéquation de certains schémas théoriques actuellement en vigueur et des institutions qui s'y réfèrent.
