Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Martin Bucer: Opera Latina, Volume 5. Defensio adversus Axioma Catholicum id est criminationem R.P. Roberti Episcopi Abrincensis (1534) by : Martin Bucer
Download or read book Martin Bucer: Opera Latina, Volume 5. Defensio adversus Axioma Catholicum id est criminationem R.P. Roberti Episcopi Abrincensis (1534) written by Martin Bucer and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-11 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Responding to Bishop Robert Ceneau, Sorbonnist, Bucer's subject-matter is twofold. Firstly, maintained is the compatibility of Reformation theology with Scripture, Patristic testimony, and the "saner Scholastics". Secondly, denying association with the heresy of Berengar, Bucer develops his perception of a common eucharistic theology among the Reformers, a theology Bucer finds corroborated in Scripture and Christian antiquity. After a plea for a fair hearing for the Reformation in France, Part I irenically surveys controverted dogmas and practices. Part II substantiates the thesis of fundamental harmony between Lutheran and Zwinglian eucharistic views. Part III rebuts Ceneau's polemical abuse. Republished as an Appendix is Bucer's contemporary memorandum on the viability of wider Church reunion. The tract reflects a significant transitional phase in Bucer's accommodation to both Catholic tradition and the Wittenberg sacramental theology.

Book Synopsis Religion, Political Culture, and the Emergence of Early Modern Society by : Heinz Schilling
Download or read book Religion, Political Culture, and the Emergence of Early Modern Society written by Heinz Schilling and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-05-09 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of essays by Heinz Schilling represents his three main fields of interest in early modern European history. The first section of the book, entitled 'Urban Society and Reformation', deals with urban society in northern Germany and the Netherlands from the fifteenth to the early nineteenth centuries. The author discusses social structure and changes, the problems of religion and mentality as well as political culture and thinking. The second section, 'confessionalization and Second Reformation', treats the paradigm 'Confessionalization', which denotes a fundamental process of social change within Old European society during the second half of the sixteenth and at the beginning of the seventeenth centuries. The third section, 'The Netherlands — the Pioneer Society of Early Modern Europe', deals with the Northern Netherlands as a model for early modern modernization and as a successful republican and 'bourgeois' alternative to the aristocratic Old European society. The essays collected in this book were originally written in German and published over the last fifteen years. The articles have been revised and the notes have been updated. This volume gives a broader English-speaking audience the possibility to read Heinz Schilling's research. It also provides a concise collection of the author's writings for those readers who are already familiar with his studies.

The author has based his research on various rare editions found in libraries all over Europe. He also used many unpublished sources from the abundant archives in Strasbourg.
Book Synopsis The Society of Jesus in Ireland, Scotland, and England 1541-1588 by : Thomas M. McCoog, S.J.
Download or read book The Society of Jesus in Ireland, Scotland, and England 1541-1588 written by Thomas M. McCoog, S.J. and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-11 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the first comprehensive study of the work of the Society of Jesus in the British Isles during the sixteenth century. Beginning with an account of brief papal missions to Ireland (1541) and Scotland (1562), it goes on to cover the foundation of a permanent mission to England (1580) and the frustration of Catholic hopes with the failure of the Spanish Armada (1588). Throughout the book, the activities of the Jesuits - preaching, propaganda, prayer and politics - are set within a wider European context, and within the framework of the Society's Constitutions. In particular, the sections on religious life and involvement in diplomacy show how flexibly the Jesuits adapted their "way of proceeding" to the religious and political circumstances of the British Isles, and to the demands of the Counter-Reformation.
Book Synopsis Richard Smyth and the Language of Orthodoxy: Re-imagining Tudor Catholic Polemicism by : J.Andreas Löwe
Download or read book Richard Smyth and the Language of Orthodoxy: Re-imagining Tudor Catholic Polemicism written by J.Andreas Löwe and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-11 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Tudor struggle for Reformation and Catholic Reformation, for power and for souls, Richard Smyth, theologian and educator, refined the art of polemicism to fight against the advance of heresy at home and abroad, both in the lingua franca of academic circles and the language of his own people. A much neglected voice today, Smyth spoke passionately and influentially on justification, monastic vows, and the Eucharist. He clashed with leading reformers such as Bucer, Cranmer, Jewel and Vermigli in verbal debates and in print. New evidence from Douai shows how he trained and equipped a younger generation to continue the fight. A fascinating and enlightening work for the interested layperson and the expert alike, Dr. Loewe’s scholarly and readable study dissects catholic reactions to the religious upheaval in England during the reigns of three successive Tudor monarchs.
