Download or read book Crusade in Europe written by Dwight D. Eisenhower and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2013-01-02 with total page 721 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A classic of World War II literature, an incredibly revealing work that provides a near comprehensive account of the war and brings to life the legendary general and eventual president of the United States. • "Gives the reader true insight into the most difficult part of a commander's life." —The New York Times Five-star General Dwight D. Eisenhower was arguably the single most important military figure of World War II. Crusade in Europe tells the complete story of the war as he planned and executed it. Through Eisenhower's eyes the enormous scope and drama of the war--strategy, battles, moments of great decision--become fully illuminated in all their fateful glory. Penned before his Presidency, this account is deeply human and helped propel him to the highest office. His personal record of the tense first hours after he had issued the order to attack leaves no doubt of his travails and reveals how this great leader handled the ultimate pressure. For historians, his memoir of this world historic period has become an indispensable record of the war and timeless classic.

Download or read book The World as Design written by Otl Aicher and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-04-27 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Otl Aicher's writings are explorations of the world, a substantive part of his work. In moving through the history of thought and design, building and construction, he assures us of the possibilities of arranging existence in a humane fashion. As ever he is concerned with the question of the conditions needed to produce a civilised culture. These conditions have to be fought for against apparent factual or material constraints and spiritual and intellectual substitutes on offer. Otl Aicher likes a dispute. For this reason, the volume contains polemical statements on cultural and political subjects as well as practical reports and historical exposition. He fights with productive obstinacy, above all for the renewal of Modernism, which he claims has largely exhausted itself in aesthetic visions; he insists the ordinary working day is still more important than the "cultural Sunday". Book excerpt: An attractive, interesting layout can certainly attract and please the reader; but when the readers are not good, reading requires extra effort and any pleasure is short-lived. 'Detail in Typography' is a concise and close-up view of the subject. It considers all the elements that constitute a column of text letters, words, the line, and the space around these elements - and it discusses what is essential for the legibility of text.
Download or read book Mediarchy written by Yves Citton and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2019-11-11 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We think that we live in democracies: in fact, we live in mediarchies. Our political regimes are based less on nations or citizens than on audiences shaped by the media. We assume that our social and political destinies are shaped by the will of the people without realizing that ‘the people’ are always produced, both as individuals and as aggregates, by the media: we are all embedded in mediated publics, ‘intra-structured’ by the apparatuses of communication that govern our interactions. In this major book, Yves Citton maps out the new regime of experience, media and power that he designates by the term ‘mediarchy’. To understand mediarchy, we need to look both at the effects that the media have on us and also at the new forms of being and experience that they induce in us. We can never entirely escape from the effects of the mediarchies that operate through us but by becoming more aware of their conditioning, we can develop the new forms of political analysis and practice which are essential if we are to rise to the unprecedented challenges of our time. This comprehensive and far-reaching book will be essential reading for students and scholars in media and communications, politics and sociology, and it will be of great interest to anyone concerned about the multiple and complex ways that the media – from newspapers and TV to social media and the internet – shape our social, political and personal lives today.

Book Synopsis Charlotte Posenenske by : Burkhard Brunn
Download or read book Charlotte Posenenske written by Burkhard Brunn and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This generously illustrated volume places German sculptor Charlotte Posenenske's groundbreaking works from the 1960s firmly within the history of Minimalist sculpture and Conceptual art. A contemporary of Donald Judd, Posenenske is most known for her body of spare, repetitive forms made from industrial materials, corrugated cardboard, pressboard and sheet metal, which she manipulated and bent for public spaces and performative appearances. In the mid-1960s, after producing several series of Abstract Expressionist and Constructivist paintings, Posenenske began the body of work she is most associated with today: the infinitely positionable and site-specific ventilation shaft-like series Square Tubes (1967). She was featured in Documenta 12 in 2007 and her pieces are part of numerous collections, but her work receded from the foreground when she abandoned sculpture in 1968, feeling that art did not have sufficient political impact. Posenenske died in 1985; this monograph secures her legacy.
