Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spanish poet Juan Ramón Jiménez (1881–1958; Nobel laureate 1956) wrote at a key moment in literary history. Since Jiménez’s lyrical output covers the poetic tradition from Romanticism through Symbolism to the Avant-Gardes, his work can be regarded as a condensation of the modern paradigm. Julio Jensen investigates the lyrical subject appearing in Jiménez’s poetry as exemplary of the notion of modern subjectivity. He does so by assuming a historical correlation between literature and philosophy in the sense that if philosophical discourse conceptualizes the prevailing understanding of the human being at a given moment, literary discourse represents it. Modern thought does not accept any other foundation than subjectivity. At the same time, the awareness of the subject’s finitude engenders pessimism with respect to its status as world-generating principle. One of the primary aims of this study, then, is to show how Jiménez poignantly enacts this vacillation between self-enthronement and self-eradication. With insightful readings of Jiménez’s poetry, the author opens a rich vein in the work of a writer who would serve as a central reference for later Spanish-language poets such as Federico Garcá Lorca, Pablo Neruda and Octavio Paz.

Book excerpt: White Light: The Poetry of Alberto Blanco examines the interplay of complementary images and concepts in the award-winning Mexican writer's cycle of poems from 1979 to 2018. Blanco’s poetic trilogy A la luz de siempre is characterized by its broad range of form and subject and by the poet's own eclectic background as a chemist, maker of collages, and musician. Blanco speaks the language of the visual arts, science, mathematics, music, and philosophy, and creates work with deep interdisciplinary roots. This book explores how polarities such as space and place, reading and writing, sound and silence, visual and verbal representation, and faith and doubt are woven through A la luz de siempre. These complements reveal how Blanco’s poetry, like the phenomenon of white light, embraces paradox and transforms into something more than the sum of its disparate and polychromatic parts.

In its paragraphs are the whole path very well written but very concrete and very raw. There is more than enough information in order to clarify the priorities to which this study applies (illustrated with the 22 "official" Tarot Trumps of the Gnostic Movement drawn by Iglasias Janeiro). Also includes a sizable editor's Appendix with the following texts: -Sepher Yetzirah -The Twelve Keys of Basil Valentine -Viridarium Chymicum -Tarot Prediction.

Book excerpt: Island in the Light / Isla en la luz is a fascinating and insightful compilation that pairs contemporary Cuban visual art and literature by having 30 prominent writers respond to the works of 35 renowned artists. Contemporary Cuban art, literature, and music come together in Island in the Light / Isla en la luz. This bilingual compilation of the work of 35 artists and 30 writers began by selecting artwork by renowned artists and asking prominent writers to create original stories, poems, or essays in response. The result is a thoroughly original and captivating selection of visual arts and literature in dialogue that conveys a sense of the essence and energy of Cuban arts today. Artists represented include Tania Bruguera, Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons, Yoan Capote, Teresita Fernández, Roberto Fabelo, Carlos Garaicoa, and Enrique Martinez Celaya. Among the writers are Wendy Guerra, José Kozer, Jorge Enrique Lage, Legna Rodríguez Iglesias, Achy Obejas, Leonardo Padura, and Reina María Rodríguez. The works are drawn from the Jorge M. Pérez Art Collection; the majority have been gifted to the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), while the others are promised gifts to PAMM. The volume also includes music: Pavel Urkiza composed original scores inspired by several of the selections that readers link to through QR codes. In addition to the short stories, poems, and essays inspired by the artwork, the volume includes commentary and critical essays by Jorge M. Pérez, Carlos Garaicoa, and Wendy Guerra and Leonardo Padura. Proceeds benefit The Jorge M. Pérez Family Foundation, which will redirect the funds to arts organizations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kelli D. Zaytoun draws on Gloria Anzaldúa's thought to present a radically inclusive and expansive approach to selfhood, creativity, scholarship, healing, coalition-building, and activism. Zaytoun focuses on Anzaldúa's naguala/ shapeshifter, a concept of nagualismo. This groundbreaking theory of subjectivity details a dynamic relationship between “inner work” and "public acts" that strengthens individuals' roles in social and transformative justice work. Zaytoun's detailed emphasis on la naguala, and Nahua metaphysics specifically, brings much needed attention to Anzaldúa's long-overlooked contribution to the study of subjectivity. The result is a women and queer of color, feminist-focused work aimed at scholars in many disciplines and intended to overcome barriers separating the academy from everyday life and community. An original and moving analysis, Shapeshifting Subjects draws on unpublished archival material to apply Anzaldúa's ideas to new areas of thought and action.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work demonstrates that twentieth-century Nicaraguan poetry can not be comprehended in its fullest dimension without an understanding of the literary traditions of France and the United States. Ever since Ruben Dario established Hispanic America's literary independence from Spain in the nineteenth century with his modernista revolution, poets in Nicaragua actively have engaged in a dialogue with the works of French and North American authors as a means of assimilating and transforming them and thereby inventing a profoundly Nicaraguan literary identity. This process has resulted in what might be called a double genealogy in Nicaraguan poetry: certain poets attracted to the alchemical properties of the poetic word and a transcendent, mythic, meta-reality seem to have descended from French literary forebears; others, interested in an expansive, poeticized version of history and verisimilitude, have roots that might be traced to North American soil. This division is a provisional, experimental means of grouping Nicaraguan poets based not on the traditional compartmentalization of literary generations, but on the "family resemblances" of poetic affinities. Presented here is an effective analysis of the "familial" nature of the Nicaraguan poets achieving their own literary independence by taking into account socio-political and historical considerations, common literary themes, as well as the intertextual relations that form the basis of international literary dialogues. This rigorous, but flexible, approach to modern Nicaraguan poetry enables the reader to accompany the poets on their journeys toward God and the end of the world; into a timeless Nicaraguan landscape invaded by U.S. Marines; beyond a contemporary urban portrait of Los Angeles; through the horrifying European battlefields of World War I and the trenches of Nicaragua's revolution against the Somoza dictatorship. The English-speaking reader probably will be unfamiliar with most of the seven preeminent Nicarguan poets whose works are the subject of this book, but it is hoped that the reader will realize that the poetry of Nicaraguans Alfonso Cortes, Salomon de la Selva, Jose Coronel Urtecho, Pablo Antonio Cuadra, Joaquin Pasos, Carlos Martinez Rivas, and Ernesto Cardenal is worthy of serious study. Furthermore, the poems of these authors take on a richer meaning when they are studied as co-presences in relation to certain texts by Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Mallarme, and Supervielle, or - in an "American" context - by poets such as Whitman, Pound, Eliot, and Masters. A relatively small country with a rich, diverse tradition in poetry, Nicaragua has maintained high literary standards generation after generation and has produced poets of a world-class stature whose time has come for greater recognition.

Book excerpt: How to awaken the Ureaus--the serpent power of spiritual transcendence within each of us--and connect to the superconscious of the universe • Reveals the biochemistry of how the body’s melanin provides the template for the subtle energy body or light body • Shows how embracing the dark light consciousness of the awakened Ureaus opens a portal to the sacred darkness of the superconscious • Provides illustrated instructions for meditation practices, breathing exercises, and yoga postures to safely awaken Ureaus/Kundalini energy Within each of us lies the potential to activate a personal connection to the superconscious. Called “Ureaus” in ancient Egyptian texts and “Kundalini” in ancient Hindu yoga traditions, our innate serpent power of spiritual transcendence inhabits the base of the spine in its dormant state. When awakened, it unfurls along the spinal column to the brain, connecting individual consciousness to the consciousness of the universe enfolded within the dark matter of space. At the root of creativity and spiritual genius across innumerable cultures and civilizations, this intelligent force reveals portals that enfold time, space, and the luminous matrix of reality itself. Combining physics, neuroscience, and biochemistry with ancient traditions from Africa and India, Edward Bruce Bynum, Ph.D., explores the ancient Egyptian science of the Ureaus and reveals how it is intimately connected to dark matter and to melanin, a light-sensitive, energy-conducting substance found in the brain, nervous system, and organs of all higher life-forms. He explains how the dark light of melanin serves as the biochemical infrastructure for the subtle energy body, just as dark matter, together with gravity, holds the galaxies and constellations together. With illustrated instructions, he shows how to safely awaken and stabilize the spiritual energy of the Ureaus through meditation practices, breathing exercises, and yoga postures as well as how to prepare the subtle body for transdimensional soul travel. By embracing the dark light of the shining serpent within, we overcome our collective fear of the vast living darkness without. By embracing the dark, we transcend reality to the dimension of light.

He then shows in chapter 1 how literary critics of the principal newspapers and literary magazines of such countries as Venezuela, Argentina, and Chile examined this French text, which we know today as one of the fundamental works of modernism. Shortly thereafter interest in the Recherche spread to Cuba, Mexico, Uruguay, and Colombia. Eventually it would be read in all parts of the New World. Over the years Spanish Americans have continued to write about the Recherche and have published several noteworthy books on it, which are included in the comprehensive bibliography which serves as an appendix."--BOOK JACKET.
