Book excerpt: Cette thèse rend compte de la nature de la relation à la forêt des anciens salariés migrants installés dans les ex-chantiers d'exploitation forestière. Elle se déploie sur une double approche diachronique et synchronique. L'approche diachronique est subdivisée en deux temporalités : « l'âge préindustriel » et « l'âge industriel ». Cette fragmentation du passé a fourni à ce travail deux des trois parties sur lesquelles il s'articule. S'agissant de la première temporalité, elle reconstitue les conditions de vie des populations et définit le mode de gestion prégnant de la forêt avant l'installation et l'influence de l'industrie forestière. L'analyse révèle qu'à « l'âge préindustriel » les populations vivaient essentiellement de la forêt et elles la géraient durablement. La seconde replace les populations dans l'univers des chantiers et démontre qu'avec la création des emplois salariés, ces dernières ne percevaient plus la forêt comme une alternative économique fondamentale. Elle apporte un éclairage sur les dynamiques sociales importées par l'essor du salariat : la modernisation des localités, l'évolution des modes de vie des populations, des besoins sociaux, des mentalités ainsi que le relâchement des rapports de dépendance des ménages envers la forêt. Elle met plus en avant le rôle central de l'emploi dans la préservation de la pression des ménages sur les ressources foncières forestières. La dernière approche s'adosse sur le contexte post-emploi et examine le retour des populations à l'exploitation massive de la forêt en raison de la généralisation de la précarité et l'absence d'alternatives. Ainsi, au terme de l'exercice de la comparaison auquel les deux approches exploitées invitent, la thèse aboutit à l'affirmation de l'existence d'une gestion non durable des forêts dans les anciens chantiers.
