Book excerpt: The purpose of the role of binational entrepreneurs as social and economic bridge builders between Europe and North Africa is to show academics and practitioners the importance of the role of European bi-nationals. It contains chapters by professional practitioners from a number of countries and businesses, and from journalists and security agency members. The main issues discussed are the principle features of successful integration of North African immigrants into French and Spanish societies and the causes and symptoms of dysfunctional integration; how a partnership network can be established between the Maghreb diaspora in France and Spain and their parent countries, what the obstacles of such a network are and what can be used to develop it; how emigrants of dual nationality are viewed in their countries of origin and how the process of social reintegration can be assured; if dual nationals can play a role in giving an impetus to economic growth in North African countries and if France and Spain can adopt measures to facilitate this process; the respective roles of government and NGOs and international organizations; and how relevant the lessons are that can be learned from this case study to the relationships between other immigrant populations and their host countries. This book includes some suggestions for action discussed in the workshop prior to this publication.

We are experiencing a wave of international migration, and the diversity of migrants – in terms of how they identify, their external and self-image, and their participation in society – is increasingly noticeable. After the introduction of the Reform and Opening Up policy, over 10 million migrants left China, with Europe the main destination for Chinese emigration after 1978. This volume provides multidisciplinary answers to open questions: How and to what extent do Chinese immigrants participate in their host societies? What kind of impact is the increasing number of highly qualified immigrants from China having on the development and perception of overseas Chinese communities in Europe? How is the development of Chinese identity transforming in relation to generational change? By focusing on two key European countries, Germany and France, this volume makes a topical contribution to research on (new) Chinese immigrants in Europe.

Book excerpt: When the Soviet Union broke apart in 1991, the Russian Federation and the newly independent republics of the Baltics, the Caucasus and Central Asia engaged in redefining their national identity in a challenging regional and global context. The stances and policies towards the minorities living in these countries became part of the striving towards national independence and identity formation. Despite vastly different post-Soviet nation-building trajectories, the development and implementation of state policies towards minorities had similar relevance and importance across the region. Thirty years after the end of the USSR what is the situation of minorities and minority issues in the countries that emerged from that multi-ethnic state? How have the former republics – including Russia dealt with their minorities and minority affairs? To what protection and rights are minority communities entitled to? Studies of the dissolution of the USSR and of nation-building in the independent post-Soviet states have flourished over the past decades. However, despite the relevance of the theme, there is a dearth of specialist publications which address the many issues related to minority communities in the post-Soviet space. This volume attempts to fill this gap by providing a collection of essays covering some of the most relevant aspects of the contemporary status and situation of minorities in the area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christianity first came to China by way of the Silk Road in the seventh century, and, ever since, this great and enduring civilization in the heart of Asia has been home to brothers and sisters of Christ. Christians in China: A.D. 600 to 2000 chronicles the lives of the Chinese faithful who through the centuries have been both accepted and rejected by their own countrymen. It explores the unique religious and political situations in which Chinese Christians, Catholic and Protestant, have struggled to live their faith and give witness to Christ. This major work covers each of the historic periods in China with a focus on the development of Christianity and its cultural interaction in each period. It shows the evolution of Christianity as it occurred within the Peopleಙs Republic of China. While telling the stories of various Christians throughout Chinese history, the author addresses a few key questions: How the did the Church develop over many centuries in a culture so different from the West? How do Christians in China give witness to their faith? How do they contribute to the life of the universal Church? The answer to such questions provides a meaningful historical background to the broad approach of Pope Benedict XVI in His Letter to the Catholics in China issued on June 30, 2007. Illustrated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to be resilient in a societal or in an international context? Where does resilience come from? From which discipline was it 'imported' into international relations (IR)? If a particular government employs the meaning of resilience to its own benefit, should scholars reject the analytical purchase of the concept of resilience as a whole? Does a government have the monopoly of understanding how resilience is defined and applied? This book addresses these questions. Even though resilience in global politics is not new, a major shift is currently happening in how we understand and apply resilience in world politics. Resilience is indeed increasingly theorised, rather than simply employed as a noun; it has left the realm of vocabulary and entered the terrain of concept. This book demonstrates the multiple origins of resilience, traces the diverse expressions of resilience in IR to various historical markers, and propose a theory of resilience in world politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The day after the epidemic broke out in Wuhan, Chinese people in France are already busy sending masks across borders and sharing media information; at the same time, a significant number of Chinese people are victims of racist attacks, insults and discrimination in France. Based on both quantitative and qualitative empirical data, this book reveals the new dynamics and interactions generated by the Covid-19 pandemic not only between different sub-groups of Chinese in France, but also between ethnic Chinese and their both countries: China and France. Mutual aid, local or transnational solidarity, inclusion initiatives, like any act of exclusion and hostility, invite you to question the essence of humanity in transnational settings, beyond the racialization of the Covid-19 virus.

Book excerpt: Putting movement at the center of our political and practical perspectives is to consider several issues related to the movement itself, including questions about the concept of “pure” culture. The migrant—s/he who moves—is seen as an “intruder” and a threat to cultural norms, but other frightening social mutations such as environmental problems or the growing place of artificial intelligence in societies are just some examples of evolving cultural and social identity, observable in each temporality, each geographical area and even in each discipline, and make it possible to study the different aspects of the dynamic movement that is at the origin of social changes. This volume explores the ways in which populations confronted with such social changes are affected, and which consequently can foster new ways of individual or collective decision-making.
