Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guillaume de Saluste Du Bartas was the most popular and widely-imitated poet in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century England and Scotland. C. S. Lewis felt that a reconsideration of his works' British reception was 'long overdue' back in the 1950s, and this study finally provides the first comprehensive account of how English-speaking authors read, translated, imitated, and eventually discarded Du Bartas' model for Protestant poetry. The first part shows that Du Bartas' friendship with James VI and I was key to his later popularity. Du Bartas' poetry symbolized a transnational Protestant literary culture in Huguenot France and Britain. Through Jamesâ intervention, Scottish literary tastes had a significant impact in England. Later chapters assess how Sidney, Spenser, Milton, and many other poets justified writing poetic fictions in reaction to Du Bartas' austere emphasis on scriptural truth. These chapters give equal attention to how Du Bartas' example offered a route into original verse composition for male and female poets across the literate population. Du Bartas' Legacy in England and Scotland responds to recent developments in transnational and translation studies, the history of reading, women's writing, religious literature, and manuscript studies. It argues that Du Bartas' legacy deserves far greater prominence than it has previously received because it offers a richer, more democratic, and more accurate view of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century English, Scottish, and French literature and religious culture.

Ongoing since the beginning of the 1980's, this renaissance has produced an abundance of Jesus studies that also display a welcome diversity of methods, approaches and hypotheses. The Handbook of the Study of the Historical Jesus is designed to handle this diversity and abundance. Drawing from first-class scholarship throughout the world, the four large volumes of the Handbook offer a unique assembly of leading experts presenting their approaches to the historical Jesus, as well as a thought-out compilation of original studies on a large variety of topics pertaining to Jesus research and adjacent areas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thoroughly researched work, David M. Gitlitz traces the lives and fortunes of three clusters of sixteenth-century crypto-Jews in Mexico’s silver mining towns. Previous studies of sixteenth-century Mexican crypto-Jews focus on the merchant community centered in Mexico City, but here Gitlitz looks beyond Mexico’s major population center to explore how clandestine religious communities were established in the reales, the hinterland mining camps, and how they differed from those of the capital in their struggles to retain their Jewish identity in a world dominated economically by silver and religiously by the Catholic Church. In Living in Silverado Gitlitz paints an unusually vivid portrait of the lives of Mexico’s early settlers. Unlike traditional scholarship that has focused mainly on macro issues of the silver boom, Gitlitz closely analyzes the complex workings of the haciendas that mined and refined silver, and in doing so he provides a wonderfully detailed sense of the daily experiences of Mexico’s early secret Jews.

Book excerpt: "The study deals with all those passages in the Palestinian Targums, the Aramaic translations of the Pentateuch, that refer to the Resurrection of the Dead. Of central interest in it is the question to what extent the targumic traditions on a future resurrection of the body or on the fate of the soul after death agree with or differ from corresponding traditions in rabbinic sources." "With a few exceptions, the relation between targumic traditions and rabbinic sources has been neglected in targumic studies of the last decades." "This may have been caused by the questionable assumptions that (a) the Aramaic of the Palestinian Targums represents the spoken Aramaic of Palestine in the New Testament period, (b) the Palestinian Targums contain an important number of early pre-Christian traditions, and (c) the Palestinian Targums are popular in origin, being written in the vernacular, in contrast with the scholastic, authoritative expositions in the learned rabbinic sources." "Harry Sysling first offers a survey of these and other important issues in targumic research of the past and of recent opinions on character, origin and interrelationship of the Palestinian Targums. In the following chapters, the author makes a careful analysis of those passages in the Palestinian Targums that directly by the use of specific terminology, or indirectly by the use of metaphors, refer to the resurrection of the body and to the fate of the body and/or soul after death."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
