Book Synopsis Banques locales et banques régionales en France au XIXe siècle by : Alain Plessis
Download or read book Banques locales et banques régionales en France au XIXe siècle written by Alain Plessis and published by Albin Michel. This book was released on 2017-06-01 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis A Social History of Nineteenth-Century France by : Roger Price
Download or read book A Social History of Nineteenth-Century France written by Roger Price and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-24 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1987, A Social History of Nineteenth-Century France argues that the social impact of the French Revolution has been greatly exaggerated, and that in 1815 France was still predominantly a rural and pre-industrial society. The revolution introduced only very limited changes in social structures and relationships – the daily lives of ordinary people remained virtually unchanged. A much more decisive turning point in French history, the author suggests, was the period of structural change in economy and society, which began in the mid nineteenth century. The first part of the book looks at many changes in the economy and their effect on living standards and social environment. The second part identifies the social groups which make up French society and provides detailed analyses of their lifestyles and social relationships. Part Three considers the influence of such key institutions as churches, schools, and the state. Drawing on an exceptionally wide range of primary sources, this is likely to be the definitive overview of French society for many years to come and will be of interest to researchers of French history and European history.

Book Synopsis The Oxford Handbook of Banking and Financial History by : Youssef Cassis
Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Banking and Financial History written by Youssef Cassis and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-06-23 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The financial crisis of 2008 aroused widespread interest in banking and financial history among policy makers, academics, journalists, and even bankers, in addition to the wider public. References in the press to the term 'Great Depression' spiked after the failure of Lehman Brothers in November 2008, with similar surges in references to 'economic history' at various times during the financial turbulence. In an attempt to better understand the magnitude of the shock, there was a demand for historical parallels. How severe was the financial crash? Was it, in fact, the most severe financial crisis since the Great Depression? Were its causes unique or part of a well-known historical pattern? And have financial crises always led to severe depressions? Historical reflection on the recent financial crises and the long-term development of the financial system go hand in hand. This volume provides the material for such a reflection by presenting the state of the art in banking and financial history. Nineteen highly regarded experts present chapters on the economic and financial side of banking and financial activities, primarily though not solely in advanced economies, in a long-term comparative perspective. In addition to paying attention to general issues, not least those related to theoretical and methodological aspects of the discipline, the volume approaches the banking and financial world from four distinct but interrelated angles: financial institutions, financial markets, financial regulation, and financial crises.

Book Synopsis The Bourgeois Revolution in France, 1789-1815 by : Henry Heller
Download or read book The Bourgeois Revolution in France, 1789-1815 written by Henry Heller and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2006 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last generation the classic Marxist interpretation of the French Revolution has been challenged by the so-called revisionist school. The Marxist view that the Revolution was a bourgeois and capitalist revolution has been questioned by Anglo-Saxon revisionists like Alfred Cobban and William Doyle as well as a French school of criticism headed by François Furet. Today revisionism is the dominant interpretation of the Revolution both in the academic world and among the educated public. Against this conception, this book reasserts the view that the Revolution - the capital event of the modern age - was indeed a capitalist and bourgeois revolution. Based on an analysis of the latest historical scholarship as well as on knowledge of Marxist theories of the transition from feudalism to capitalism, the work confutes the main arguments and contentions of the revisionist school while laying out a narrative of the causes and unfolding of the Revolution from the eighteenth century to the Napoleonic Age.
