Book Synopsis This Side of Philosophy by : Stephen Gingerich

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Struck by the contrast between the prestige of their literary tradition and their apparent philosophical insignificance, modern writers from Spain have devoted themselves to exploring the relation between literature and philosophy. This Side of Philosophy focuses on four major authors—Miguel de Unamuno, José Ortega y Gasset, Antonio Machado, and María Zambrano—who engage literary resources in order to reach beyond philosophy to the essential sources of life. Connecting their work to that of other European thinkers dedicated to illuminating the fertile interaction of literature and philosophy—especially Plato, Schlegel, Heidegger, and Derrida—Stephen Gingerich makes a case for the relevance of Spanish thought to contemporary efforts to expand the ethical and theoretical powers of thinking through literature. At the same time, Gingerich challenges the conventional view that contemporary Spanish thought fuses or reconciles literature and philosophy, instead discerning a call to appreciate their difference in relation. For these writers, literature and philosophy are repulsed by each other as inexorably as they are drawn together.

Book Synopsis María Zambrano’s Ontology of Exile by : Karolina Enquist Källgren
Download or read book María Zambrano’s Ontology of Exile written by Karolina Enquist Källgren and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-03-26 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the exile ontology of Spanish philosopher María Zambrano (1904-1991). Karolina Enquist Källgren connects Zambrano’s lived exile and political engagement with the Spanish Civil War to her poetic reason, and argues that Zambrano developed a theory of expressive subjectivity that combined embodiment with the expressive creativity of the human mind. The analysis of recurring literary figures and concepts—such as new materialism, the confession, image, the ruin, the heart, and awakening— show how a comprehensive argument runs as a thread through her works. Further, this book situates Zambrano’s thought in a larger European philosophical context by showing how Zambrano’s poetic reason was directly related to her unconventional exile readings of Martin Heidegger, Aristotle, Immanuel Kant, and Xavier Zubiri, among others.

Download or read book The Dawn of Historical Reason written by Howard Nelson Tuttle and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1994 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a philosophical delineation, analysis, and comparison of the historicality (Geschichtlichkeit) of human existence in the thought of Wilhelm Dilthey (1833-1911), Martin Heidegger (1889-1976), and José Ortega y Gasset (1883-1955). Historicality is fundamental for the structure and content of their thought. These thinkers are interdependent and self-consciously interrelated. All of them presuppose that human existence in history requires a discursive thought form that is uniquely appropriate to it. The author labels the birth and development of this form as the dawn of historical reason.
