La scienza sta scoprendo la dinamica miracolosa della religione, ma la scienza non ha ancora compreso il potere direttivo dinamico del pensiero dell'uomo. Tutti i cosiddetti operatori di miracoli affermano di non produrre da soli i risultati meravigliosi; di essere solo gli strumenti di un'entità superiore. Gesù non sosteneva di avere l'esclusivo potere soprannaturale che gli viene solitamente attribuito. Incoraggiò i suoi seguaci a prenderlo come centro della fede e ad usare il potere del pensiero e della parola. Chi crede in me, farà anche lui le opere che io faccio; e ne farà di più grandi".. La grande rinascita moderna della guarigione divina è dovuta all'applicazione della stessa legge che usò Gesù. Egli esigeva la fede da parte di coloro che guariva, e con quella fede come punto di contatto mentale e spirituale liberava l'energia latente nella struttura atomica dei suoi pazienti ed essi venivano restituiti alla vita e alla salute. Abbiate fede nel potere della vostra mente di penetrare e liberare l'energia che è repressa negli atomi del vostro corpo, e sarete sbalorditi dalla risposta. Le funzioni paralizzate in qualsiasi parte del corpo possono essere ripristinate all'azione parlando all'intelligenza e alla vita spirituale dentro di loro.

Book excerpt: A study of anti-Blackness and white supremacy across four continents demonstrates that colorblindness is neither new nor a subtype of racist ideology, but a constitutive technology of racism In Colorblind Tools, Marzia Milazzo offers a transnational account of anti-Blackness and white supremacy that pushes against the dominant emphasis on historical change pervading current racial theory. This emphasis on change, she contends, misses critical lessons from the past. Bringing together a capacious archive of texts on race produced in Brazil, Cuba, Mexico, Panama, the United States, and South Africa from multiple disciplines and genres, Milazzo uncovers transnational continuities in structural racism and white supremacist discourse from the inception of colonial modernity to the present. In the process, she traces the global workings of what she calls colorblind tools: technologies and strategies that at once camouflage and reproduce white domination. Whether examining Rijno van der Riet’s defense of slavery in the Cape Colony, discourses of racial mixture in Latin American eugenics and their reverberations in contemporary scholarship, the pitfalls of white “antiracism,” or Chicana indigenist aesthetics, Milazzo illustrates how white people collectively disavow racism to maintain power across national boundaries, and how anti-Black and colonial logics can be reproduced even in some decolonial literatures. Milazzo’s groundbreaking study proves that colorblindness is not new, nor is it a subtype of racist ideology or a hallmark of our era. Inoltre il delitto è avvenuto nella tenuta del Marchese de Cerennes, proprietario del Castello di Guildford. E per il dottor Henshaw è un rebus il perchè un francese si sia installato in un villaggio inglese così tranquillo e privo di attrattive. Inoltre il francese non esce mai di casa ed è sempre circondato da una quantità incredibile di stranieri. Un giallo serrato e pieno di ritmo e mistero.

Book excerpt: Giovanni Battista Rubini (1794-1854) was a legendary tenor and the first 19th-century non-castrati male singer to become an international star of opera. The previous two centuries had been the era of the castrati, with tenors and basses relegated to character and supporting roles in the operas of their time. Rubini stood apart because he not only matched the castrati in coloratura and pathos, but he also had an extraordinarily high voice. With Rubini’s rise, and in his wake, several tenors came to sing roles written specifically for them by Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, and many other lesser-known bel canto composers. Signaling the end of the dominance of castrati on stage, this period would last some 40 years until the advent of Grand Opera, Wagner, and Verdi and the appearance of the first so-called High C from the chest by Gilbert-Louis Duprez in 1837. Since then, the accepted tenor sound has followed the tradition epitomized by Enrico Caruso and, in our own era, Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo. Many composers, conductor, and performers would come to regard bel canto dramatic operas as decorative and vapid until Maria Callas and Tulio Serafin demonstrated the heights this genre of opera could reach. However, opera directors and opera performers of late who have expressed an interest in reviving selected masterpieces from the bel canto tradition have found themselves confronted with the problem of locating tenors versed in the vocal techniques necessary to carry the high tessituras. In Giovanni Battista Rubini and the Bel Canto Tenors: History and Technique, Dan H. Marek explores the extraordinary life of Rubini in order to frame this special period in the history of opera and connect the technique of the castrati who were among Rubini’s instructors. Drawing on the work of Berton Coffin, Marek offers long-sought answers to the challenges presented by high tessitura of bel canto operas for tenors.
