Book Synopsis Displaying the Orient by : Zeynep Ç Elik
Download or read book Displaying the Orient written by Zeynep Ç Elik and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gathering architectural pieces from all over the world, the Paris Universal Exposition of 1867 introduced to fairgoers the notion of an imaginary journey, a new tourism en place. Through this and similar expositions, the world's cultures were imported to European and American cities as artifacts and presented to nineteenth-century men and women as the world in microcosm, giving a quick and seemingly realistic impression of distant places. elik examines the display of Islamic cultures at nineteenth-century world's fairs, focusing on the exposition architecture. She asserts that certain sociopolitical and cultural trends now crucial to our understanding of historical transformations in both the West and the world of Islam were mirrored in the fair's architecture. Furthermore, dominant attitudes toward cross-cultural exchanges were revealed repeatedly in Westerners' responses to these pavilions, in Western architects' interpretations of Islamic stylistic traditions, and in the pavilions' impact in such urban centers. Although the world's fairs claimed to be platforms for peaceful cultural communication, they displayed the world according to a hierarchy based on power relations. elik's delineation of this hierarchy in the exposition buildings enables us to understand both the adversarial relations between the West and the Middle East, and the issue of cultural self-definition for Muslim societies of the nineteenth century. Book Synopsis The European Illustrated Press and the Emergence of a Transnational Visual Culture of the News, 1842-1870 by : Thomas Smits
Download or read book The European Illustrated Press and the Emergence of a Transnational Visual Culture of the News, 1842-1870 written by Thomas Smits and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-12-05 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at the roots of a global visual news culture: the trade in illustrations of the news between European illustrated newspapers in the mid-nineteenth century. In the age of nationalism, we might suspect these publications to be filled with nationally produced content, supporting a national imagined community. However, the large-scale transnational trade in illustrations, which this book uncovers, points out that nineteenth-century news consumers already looked at the same world. By exchanging images, European illustrated newspapers provided them with a shared, transnational, experience.

Book Synopsis Locating the Global by : Holger Weiss
Download or read book Locating the Global written by Holger Weiss and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-08-10 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume adds to the plurality of global histories by locating the global through its articulation and manifestation within particular localities. It accomplishes this by bringing together interlinked case-studies that analyse various temporal and spatial dimensions of the global in the local and the interactions between the local and the global. The case-studies apply a spatial approach to analyse how global questions of space, movement, networks, borders, and territory are worked out at a local level. The material draws on the Nordic countries, Europe, the Atlantic world, Africa, and Australia and ranges from the seventeenth to the twentieth century. It is further divided into sections that address topics such as the translocality of humans and goods, local articulations of identities and globalities, parliamentarism and anti-colonialism, the organization of knowledge and the construction of spaces of representation and memory.
