Deux evenements ont vraiment contribue a faire avancer la posture de l'Eglise catholique durant ces dernieres decennies: le concile Vatican II, avec la declaration Nostra Aetate sur les relations entre l'Eglise catholique et les autres religions; la rencontre d'Assise en 1986 ou Jean-Paul II a invite des representants des principales religions du monde a venir se rassembler et prier pour la paix. Comment, des lors, etre surs de bien se situer, comme chretiens catholiques vis-a-vis des autres ? Comment fonder cette attitude d'ouverture, de respect et d'estime de la foi des autres, tout en accordant a la revelation chretienne une place centrale ? Cet ouvrage propose trois clefs de lecture theologique pour fonder ce juste positionnement, ainsi qu'une explicitation a travers les nombreux textes post-concilaires de l'enseignement officiel de l'Eglise catholique.

Book excerpt: En septembre 2000, l'affirmation contenue dans la déclaration "Dominus Iesus" sur l'unicité et l'universalité salvifique de Jésus-Christ et de son Eglise : "On doit donc tenir fermement la distinction entre la foi théologale et la croyance dans les autres religions" (DI7) pose, au-delà de l'usage du vocabulaire, une question théologique centrale pour les relations entre la foi chrétienne et la "foi" des Autres : comment la spécificité de la foi chrétienne, définie par l'articulation entre l'acte de croire et son objet et centrée autour de la vérité révélée en Jésus-Christ, permet-elle d'envisager la "foi" des autres, tant dans sa démarche que dans son objet? Une lecture attentive des textes conciliaires, enracinée dans une enquête biblique centrée sur le vocabulaire de la foi, nous a invité à souligner l'interaction permanente entre la foi chrétienne et la "foi" des autres, ainsi que le lien structural qui existe entre la révélation apportée en Christ et "le témoignage incessant sur lui-même que Dieu donne aux hommes dans les choses créées" (DV3). Cela permet de considérer, d'une part, que la spécificité de la foi chrétienne n'est pas de l'ordre de l'exclusivité, mais se veut au contraire révélatrice de ce qui est au coeur de l'humain, et d'autre part, que la "foi" des non-chrétiens, si elle se rapporte au mystère de Dieu engagé dans la création, n'est pas sans lien avec la vérité de la foi chrétienne. Dans les textes récents du Magistère, c'est la haute estime des chrétiens pour la prière des autres, ainsi que le regard fondamentalement bienveillant sur ce que ceux-ci confessent et sur les oeuvres produites par leur "foi", qui témoignent paradoxalement de la crédibilité de la foi chrétienne dans sa prétention à être le lieu où peuvent s'accomplir les aspirations religieuses de l'humanité.
