-- Pluriel provides a composite snapshot, taken from a few particular angles, of the variety of poems written in Canada over the past few decades. In shaping this anthology the editors were attracted to the diverse cultural and social responses evident in the work of poets writing in English and French, both across Canada, and in particular in Quebec and other French-speaking regions of the country. Each poem is offered in its original language and in translation.

Book Synopsis Culture as a Vocation by : Vincent Dubois
Download or read book Culture as a Vocation written by Vincent Dubois and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-10-30 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vocational occupations are attractive not so much for their material rewards as for the prestige and self-fulfillment they confer. They require a strong personal commitment, which can be subjectively experienced in terms of passion and selflessness. The choice of a career in the cultural sector provides a good example of this. What are the terms of this calling? What predisposes individuals to answer it? What are the meanings of such a choice? To answer these questions, this book focuses on would-be cultural managers. By identifying their social patterns, by revealing the resources, expectations and visions of the world they invest in their choice, it sheds new light on these occupations. In these intermediary and indeterminate social positions, family heritages intersect with educational strategies, aspirations of upward mobility with tactics against downward mobility, and social critique with adjustment strategies. Ultimately the study of career choices in cultural management suggests a new take on the analysis of social reproduction and on the embodiment of the new spirit of capitalism. The empirical findings of this research conducted in France are set in a broader comparative perspective, at the European level and with the USA.
Book Synopsis The Sociology of Arts and Markets by : Andrea Glauser
Download or read book The Sociology of Arts and Markets written by Andrea Glauser and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-06-15 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection offers an in-depth analysis of the complex and changing relationship between the arts and their markets. Highly relevant to almost any sociological exploration of the arts, this interaction has long been approached and studied. However, rapid and far-reaching economic changes have recently occurred. Through a number of new empirical case studies across multiple artistic, historic and geographical settings, this volume illuminates the developments of various art markets, and their sociological analyses. The contributions include chapters on artistic recognition and exclusion, integration and self-representation in the art market, sociocultural changes, the role of the gallery owner, and collectives, rankings, and constraints across the cultural industries. Drawing on research from Japan, Switzerland, France, Italy, China, the US, UK, and more, this rich and global perspective challenges current debates surrounding art and markets, and will be an important reference point for scholars and students across the sociology of arts, cultural sociology and culture economy.
Book Synopsis Voicing Dissent by : Violaine Roussel
Download or read book Voicing Dissent written by Violaine Roussel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-02-02 with total page 617 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Voicing Dissent presents a unique and original series of interviews with American artists (including Guerrilla Girls on Tour, Tony Shalhoub, Shepard Fairey, Sean Astin, and many others) who have voiced their opposition to the war in Iraq. Following Pierre Bourdieu's example, these discussions are approached sociologically and provide a thorough analysis of the relationships between arts and politics as well as the limits and conditions of political speech and action. These painters and graphic artists, musicians, actors, playwrights, theatre directors and filmmakers reveal their perceptions of politics, war, security and terrorism issues, the Middle East, their experiences with activism, as well as their definition of the artist's role and their practice of citizenship. Addressing the crucial questions for contemporary democracies - such as artists' function in society, the crisis of political legitimacy and representation, the rise of new modes of contestation, and the limits to free public speech - this book will be of interest to scholars in sociology, politics, and the arts.

Book excerpt: Lives in Music analyses interwoven patterns of mobility, change, and power in music and dance practices. It challenges some commonly accepted conceptual tools that are ubiquitous in anthropology today, including cultural hybridity, transnational networks, and globalization. Based on seven “itineraries” that are the result of extensive ethnographic long-term field research efforts, the processes of geographic and social mobility, transformation, and power relative to music and dance practices are explored in different parts of the world. Seven writers provide life stories constructed through ethnographic techniques and life histories and supported by a deep knowledge of local customs.

DE L'HISTOIRE DE L'ART A LA CRITIQUE ARTISTIQUE, DE LA PEINTURE A LA SCULPTURE ET DE L'ARCHITECTURE A LA POESIE, L'ARTISTE MENE UNE INFATIGABLE QUETE D'ELEVATION SPIRITUELLE. MAIS, S'IL FAIT DE LA DIVERSITE SA CARACTERISTIQUE, CELA EST DU AUX MULTIPLES INFLUENCES QU'IL RECOIT DES SON PLUS JEUNE AGE A BERLIN, AINSI QU'A LA PLURALITE CULTURELLE A LAQUELLE IL S'INTEGRE A DIFFERENTES ETAPES DE SA VIE, LORSQU'IL SEJOURNE AU MAROC ET EN ESPAGNE ET LORSQU'IL S'ETABLIT DEFINITIVEMENT AU MEXIQUE. A BERLIN, L'ARTISTE SE LAISSE EMPORTER PAR LES AVANT-GARDES ALLEMANDES DES ANNEES 20 ET 30. LE CONTACT AVEC LES ARTISTES DANS LA MAISON FAMILIALE, ET LA FREQUENTATION REGULIERE D'EXPOSITIONS DECLENCHENT CHEZ LUI UN INTERET CROISSANT POUR L'HISTOIRE DE L'ART ET LES ARTS PLASTIQUES. SA FORMATION UNIVERSITAIRE EST SUIVIE D'UNE PRATIQUE AUTODIDACTE DE LA PEINTURE AU DEBUT DES ANNEES 40, LORSQUE MATHIAS GOERITZ FUIT L'ALLEMAGNE ET S'INSTALLE AU MAROC ESPAGNOL. EXPERIMENTATIONS QUE L'ARTISTE CONTINUE EN ESPAGNE A PARTIR DE 1945. CEPENDANT, EN DEPIT DE L'IMPORTANCE DES INFLUENCES QU'IL RECOITDANS CES PAYS, L'IMPACT LE PLUS PROFOND VIENDRA DE LA MONUMENTALITE MEXICAINE QUI DETERMINE DEFINITIVEMENT SON OEUVRE A PARTIR DU DEBUT DES ANNEES 50. SES THEORIES ET MANIFESTES TEMOIGNENT D'UN IDEAL ARTISTIQUE DE FRATERNITE ET SES EXPERIMENTATIONS PLASTIQUES D'UNE QUETE BIDIMENSIONNELLE PUIS TRIDIMENSIONNELLE D'ELEVATION SPIRITUELLE. BIEN QU'ELLES SOIENT DES OEUVRES A PART ENTIERE, L'ARTISTE NE VOIT DANS SES EXECUTIONS DE PETIT ET MOYEN FORMAT QUE DES ESQUISSES NECESSAIRES POUR CONTINUER LE PROCESSUS D'EVOLUTION PLASTIQUE QUI LE CONDUIT VERS DES OEUVRES MONUMENTALES, ANONYMES ET PUBLIQUES. A PARTIR DE LA FIN DES ANNEES 50, C'EST DONC DANS L'ART MONUMENTAL, ARCHITECTURE, SCULPTURE ET ENVIRONNEMENTS, QUE L'ARTISTE LAISSE ECLATER TOUT SON TALENT.

Download or read book Writing Acadia written by Runte and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-10-09 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phenomenal development of writing and literary creation among the francophone communities of eastern Canada has gone largely unnoticed and unprobed outside the fragmented land of Acadia. Writing Acadia attempts for the first time to observe from a distance the invention of literature in oral Acadia, and to interpret, assess and order the manifold manifestations of the transition from epic story-telling to writing as a means of nation-building. Having begun to write, modern Acadia has truly (re)written herself into existence, an existence now threatened by postmodern unwriting of literature. Destined not only for specialists but also and especially for readers with a general interest in literature, including students of all levels, Writing Acadia presents generous samples of Acadian poetry, drama and prose, with accompanying English translations.
