Book excerpt: In recent years, the increase in knowledge about the functioning of the immune system has revealed not only its importance in the defense against external agents such as pathogens or toxins, but also in the control of tumor cells and the importance of the processes of inflammation or immunological tolerance. On the one hand, all this knowledge has allowed a better understanding of the putative pathogenic consequences of immune system dysfunction, which includes inflammatory, autoimmune and immunosuppressive diseases, among others. On the other hand, current knowledge about immunoregulation has paved the way to better prevent or control transplantation rejection. However, such mechanisms underlying immune dysregulation are highly variable depending on the type of pathology (systemic chronic inflammatory diseases, autoinflammatory diseases, autoimmune disorders, immunosuppression) and on characteristics of the host such as sex, genetics, nutritional status, etc. Given the wide variety of pathologies that are a consequence of excessive, inefficient or inadequate induction of immune responses, the study of factors involved in the dysregulation of the immune system has gained great attention during the last decades.

Book excerpt: This travel pictorial and Japan travel guide captures the sites and soul of Kyoto--Japan's historical and spiritual center. An elaborate kaleidoscope of craft, artistry and religion, Kyoto is one of the world's most popular travel destinations. Art and design form the weft and warp of this vibrant 1,200-year-old city, home to hundreds of gardens, palaces, villas and magnificent wooden temples, including seventeen UNESCO World Heritage sites. Like a Zen koan, Kyoto defies easy description. Its citizens may work at Nintendo designing video games, at a company designing precision medical instruments, or sitting cross-legged meticulously affixing micro-thin flakes of gold foil onto a painting. All of them share a living heritage grounded in centuries of traditional culture. In Kyoto: City of Zen, local Kyoto expert Judith Clancy presents the most important gardens, temples, shrines and palaces of this ancient capital city and enduring cultural center. In addition to unveiling the city's spiritual and historical riches, this travel book shares with readers the exquisite foods, artistic crafts, religious ceremonies and architectural traditions that have flourished in Kyoto for over a millennium. Tea ceremonies, calligraphy, weaving, pottery, painting, drama, and many more traditional arts and crafts are presented through more than 350 photographs by Ben Simmons, whose images capture the true essence of Kyoto. The city's natural setting also comes into focus as you walk along leafy mountain paths and through spectacular parks and gardens viewing the best foliage each season has to offer.

This book was released on 2024-07-26 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) such as anti-PD-1 and anti-PD-L1 antibodies are highly effective against many types of cancer, yet durable responses are limited to a subset of patients highlighting the need for the development of effective biomarkers to predict prognosis and efficacy. Currently, PD-L1 expression in tumors, microsatellite instability (MSI) or mismatch repair deficiency (dMMR), and tumor mutation burden (TMB) are known as biomarkers for cancer immunotherapy but are not sufficient. Combination therapy with immune checkpoint inhibitors and chemotherapy or radiation therapy, as well as diverse therapies targeting intra-tumoral regulatory T cells have been described, but there are currently no unifying biomarkers that are applicable to clinically, a simple, fast, non-invasive method that can yield biomarkers of disease with a minimal adverse effect on patients is desirable. Recent findings suggest that the balancing of effector T cells and regulatory cells in the tumor microenvironment is associated with cancer progression and prognosis. Cells and molecules involved in the control of cancer are complex, and a better understanding of the tumor immune environment will lead to the development of truly effective biomarkers. This topic will focus on novel biomarkers that predict efficacy, prognosis, or the development of adverse events in various cancer immunotherapies, and extensive basic research leading to the development of biomarkers. Manuscripts consisting solely of bioinformatics or computational analysis of public genomic or transcriptomic databases which are not accompanied by robust and relevant validation (clinical cohort or biological validation in vitro or in vivo) are out of scope for this topic. We expect a wide range of research, not only in serology, genetics, and immunocytochemistry but also in bacterial flora. Research on the development of novel assays and bioinformatics methods is also welcome: • Non-invasive biomarkers for cancer immunotherapy. • Bulk RNA-seq, scRNA-seq, or Rep-seq methods. • Correlation of tumor immune cells with gut microbiota in tumor immunotherapy. • Impact of Teff and Treg balance in the tumor microenvironment on tumor prognosis. • Inflammatory and immune signatures associated with drug response versus resistance in cancer.

Book excerpt: Recent advances in cognitive neuroscience make possible an understanding of the neural events that are associated with different forms of consciousness. To fully understand and unveil the mystery of consciousness inside the brain we require examination of the concept of neural basis of conscious mind. This book provides a systematic exploration of consciousness and gives an overview of neural and quantum basis of conscious mind through careful explanation of proposed models and extends these theories challenging some generalised views on consciousness. Each chapter provides a review of the findings and theoretical accounts related to neural basis of consciousness and the mechanisms of the different varieties of consciousness. Professor Naoyuki Osaka (Kyoto University) has been active in experimental research on consciousness and attention for more than 15 years. (Series B)

Book excerpt: Green Marketing Revolution: Unveiling the Power of Sustainable Business introduces the key issues of green marketing practices and sustainable production and consumption practices for a delicate balance of ecosystems and promotes the environmental resilience of sustainable business operations in the competitive global economy. Green marketing contributes to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) like Climate Action (Goal 13), Responsible Consumption and Production (Goal 12), and Life on Land (Goal 15). The professorial inaugural lecture series by Professor Ts. Dr. Norazah Mohd Suki shares key insights that have helped green marketing gain prominence in today’s corporate landscape and changed the way businesses think about their commitment to sustainability. She emphasises that businesses that adopt sustainable practices and successfully promote their green initiatives can attract environmentally conscious customers who are willing to pay a premium for greener options. In addition, green marketing encourages businesses to adopt sustainable practices that can lead to cost savings and improve efficiency, as well as build a positive brand image and enhance their reputation. Businesses label their sustainable products with recognised certifications and labels such as Energy Star, USDA Organic or Forest Stewardship Council to give consumers immediate credibility and assurance. These certifications serve as visual cues that communicate the product’s sustainable attributes and help consumers make an informed decision. They provide transparent product information on the product’s sustainability features, including the materials used, manufacturing processes and supply chain practices, to increase consumer confidence and use QR codes or dedicated web pages to provide detailed information that interested consumers can easily access. This professorial inaugural lecture series focuses on critical green marketing issues and is a comprehensive resource for marketers, managers, retailers, advertisers, academics and marketing students. The lecture series is also suitable as a teaching tool and for discussion in a variety of courses in different disciplines at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels around the world.
