Die Technologie, die als Basistechnologie des 21. Jahrhunderts bezeichnet wird, erhält nun schon seit mehreren Jahren Einzug in die meisten Branchen der Wirtschaft. Auch im Gesundheitswesen wird der Einsatz von Künstlicher Intelligenz erforscht. In diagnostischen Szenarien konnte Künstliche Intelligenz bereits beeindruckende Ergebnisse liefern. So werden Systeme vorgestellt, die in der Diagnose von Lungenentzündungen oder in der Erkennung von Brustkrebs zuverlässiger sind als die Einschätzung des Facharztes. Dennoch werden auch Grenzen im Einsatz von Künstlicher Intelligenz offensichtlich. Fehlende oder nicht hochwertige Trainingsdaten führen zu suboptimalen Ergebnissen, die mangelnde Nachvollziehbarkeit von Entscheidungen macht einen klinischen Einsatz schwer und die Infrastruktur ist in vielen Einrichtungen nicht für den Einsatz von Künstlicher Intelligenz vorbereitet. Außerdem sieht sich das (deutsche) Gesundheitswesen Herausforderungen des Fachkräftemangels, bürokratischen Hürden und einer alternden Gesellschaft ausgesetzt. Es stellt sich die Frage, inwiefern der Einsatz von Künstlicher Intelligenz zu Effizienz- und Produktivitätssteigerungen führen kann.
